Hi, can you listen to this recording of my engine, and tell me if the tapping noise is a TADS situation or something else? Good compression, starts well, goes well. Can't feel any blow near the exhaust manifold - I had a similar noise on an chim and it was exhaust manifold blowing.
I thought it might be injectors, but a bit loud.

The tap seams to be at about 1/3 to 1/2 rpm (about 5 ish times per second)
I don't have anything to compare with. Best guess at the moment is either injectors firing, which would be 1/2 rpm, or a slight blow from one exhaust manifold port, which would also be every other revolution.
Thanks in advance.

If you haven't already done this, try either listening to the exhaust manifolds in an accurate directional way (my TVR guy uses a narrow gauge rubber or plastic tube, one end in your lug-hole, the other pointed at the manifolds and move it around), or get a small piece of paper or a feather and test that way for leaks. These noises are so often leaking manifolds, as you already said.
Sounds like tappets, or at least a tappet to me?
First I'd run through them all but if that doesn't cure the noise it's possible to run the engine with the rocker cover off for a short time (might get a bit oily), slide a feeler blade under each in turn and listen for any distinct change in noise.
Yes, sounds like a tappet to me too, though I have set them all a couple of weeks ago. That's why I was thinking exhaust blow - which can make exactly the same noise if up against the head as on my chim, or injectors. Anyway, does not sound serious, picks up OK and everything else seems fine.
To listen to the tappets use a long bladed screwdriver. Pointy end on the cam cover and the handle end shoved against your ear.
Works like a stethoscope. You will be amazed how much you can hear.
Never tried it on an exhaust blow though. Probably better to use the tube suggested above.

My guess would be tappets then a manifold gasket blow?
With the latter you can hear it clearly inside the cabin when driving as a fluttering noise from the footwell.
The tappets on old Rangies always rattle like this after being started up after a week and all the oil has drained down.

Hello,
I had quite the same noise on mine, still unresolved because I'm very afraid of adjusting the tappets because of the probility for it to be hydraulic or not...
My exhaust gasket looks in very bad shape so I'm going to replace them as it is quite cheap regarding to the cost of a new engine messed up due to adjusting hydraulic tappets
Have you sorted it out ?

Michael, si ta voiture est en état de rouler, viens me la faire écouter, j'essayerai de t'aider + un pt verre.
I Lou, if your car is running just come and let met me listen to it and I'll try to help you + beer?
Chris.
