V8 S on the bay
Discussion
Just found this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rare-TVR-S3-V8-with-very... bit of a beast.
Why, why, why does it have a Holly Carb! Surely if you're spending that much on a v8d short block and heads you'd fit a more modern fuel injection system, ie megasquirt or emerald.
Apart from than looks like a good price, especially if the mileage can be backed up. Can't see any photos of the chassis though, if it was mint I'm sure there would be one!

300+ BHP is a hell of a lot of grunt for the S chassis and drive-train to handle..
And no mention of a brake upgrade. 300bhp + (??) in a standard chassis, possibly original suspension and 240mm front brakes. Interesting.Maybe it's the engine which had done 12K miles

Maybe because it's hell of a lot cheaper than the Megasquirt or Emerald option? In fairness he has put a lot of detail in that advert, and it does look as if it is a pretty special engine with the brakes to match. The Holley does seem odd to me but they did do the job and are well respected in some quarters. If it was a Holley fed engine in the first place it would have been a lot of work to change it, for what?
He has put in a lot of detail, under ebay rules and the law this info has to be true. If the car hasnt done the mileage he says then it is fraud. MOT's should provide evidence enough.
As usual, buyer beware, check it out before risking your hard earned..!

..Advert does say. Hi-spec 4 pot Billet calipers, 285 mm front discs (cross-bolted and grooved) with braided lines all-round.
Opps, so it does. Should have gone to Specsavers Regardless of what needs to be done, or not as the case may be, the car has obviously spent a lot of money spent on it. I can't see a problem with the Holly either. If the motor is putting out 300bhp then OK a fancy ECU and throttle pots would make more, but would it be usable and worth the additional investment?Does the RV8 produce that much though without forced induction?
The Gredge - in 5.0lt form - was shy of 300 by a few bhp.
phazed's 5.5lt is over 300 but that is with megasquirt and a whole heap of work.
Is a 4.6 with a carb really going to produce over 300? I'd be interested to see the supporting eveidence.

I see no good reason the carbs would make less power than efi the inlet looks less restrictive for a start.
Low speed drivability and cold start are another matter.
Back in the day Astra get 150 on efi 170bhp on carbs this was quite common
I like it.. As a 4.6 it could redline higher than a 5.5 no? I'm sure the larger engines have more torque however

Basic plug and play megasquirt is around £600 from V8 Developments then add on a few hours on a dyno. Won't be more than a grand surely? As a very rough guesstimated figure, I haven't really looked into this though so quite happy to be proved wrong! How much is a Holley carb, then getting it set up properly, along with the associated new inlet manifolds? After spending a grand on the heads and a short block at £2200-2500. Or a long block coming in at anywhere between £2000-4500 from V8D, is it worth scrimping on the last bit? Especially as it will make the most of the work that's been done at quite some considerable cost. As for performance, my lowly 4.0 was on Surrey rolling roads dyno last summer and came in at 242hp. I'm sure with good, free flowing heads, a capacity increase (4.6 is a good sized free reving engine if done well) and a lumpy cam that 300HP on a favourable dyno may be possible. No two are ever the same! It's only 60hp extra needed to be found, maybe with some favourable rounding too . That's before improving the induction, carbon trumpets, pocketed Pistons for a even more lairy cam etc. All things that would probably be considered during a rebuild.
