'Poor relation'!!!!!!!!!!!!............ 'poor relation' !!!!!!!!
Go and wash your mouth out with soap and repeat after me 100 times:
'The S1 is the original and purest of all the S type TVR's'
mind you, I might be biased?
Seriously though there isnt that much to choose between them and you will find some real S1 fans in this forum, try telling Glenrobbo or Mk1fan (or me!) that their cars are poor relations. You need to go down on your knees to Glen (and buy him a pint) to make amends. Sometime this weekend a couple of S1's will be showing their mettle round the Spa circuit.
The S1 2.8 engine is only marginally less powerful than the 2.9 in the later cars, I doubt many people would notice the difference. The best 2.9's will have the edge but a good S1 would have the edge on an average 2.9, in the right hands.
Some prefer the more 'electronic' 2.9 to work on, some favour the dark art of the Jetronic 2.8.
The chassis and roadholding features are little different and in most cars it would be more down to the state of preparation of the car.
Personally, and I know that non S owners who visit the cars at shows seem to agree, that the 'swooping' dash of the earlier cars is the best, even if TVR did overdo it on the 'christmas tree' of warning lights.
'Well built', tall, or less nimble (old!) owners will prefer the larger doors and easier access on the later cars.....wimps!!

The 2.9's worth about 20bhp in the real world, as no 2.8 gets near 160bhp! The 2.9 also makes a cool noise - almost V8 in its woofliness.
The 2.8's got a very different character, considering they're very similar. It pops, it bangs, it's much more raspy and much more keen to rev (even though it's not actually any good at it). It's definitely got a more raw, pure feel to it than a 2.9. The S1 is (IMO) the more fun car to punt down a country road with the roof off, purely for the rasping, popping and banging! The 2.9 would unquestionably be quicker A-B with equal drivers though (although I drive a Saxo everyday to work and back which would murder either, so I'm under no illusions on my Trev! ) I've got a mix of both - an S1 that looks like an S2!
I wouldn't say the S2/3/4 are 'having their day' and the S1 not though. Most buyers buy on condition, and settle for whichever model crops up. You do get the brigade who insist on a certain colour, year, trim etc. They're the ones who wait forever for a car to pop up, then end up having to have the chassis put right a year or so later at great expense.
If you're buying an S, buy on condition and condition only. They all look nice, they're all fun, just buy one that you can enjoy is my advice.

Exactly.
There are 3 things to check.
1. the chassis
2. the chassis
3. the chassis again.
Not that they are bad, but if there is rust, it can be hard to spot, especially on top of the outriggers (where you cant's see or feel) and around the rear suspension mounts (which you can).
Everything else is fixable at relatively low cost.

I can't believe the things the OP posted on here whilst we were away hooning around the Ardennes twisties.
Poor relation? No way!
The S1 is a bit down on power* compared to the 2.9 models, but it more than makes up for that in the way it converts petrol into noise
I just love the way mine sounds going up or down through the gears, and the handling is every bit as good as an S3 once sorted.
I don't think I was shamed at our Blyton Park track day last year.
Just follow the advice given on here, buy a good example of any model and I guarantee you'll love whichever flavour you end up with.
Beards? That's for the younger ones these days, eh Simon?
And real ale is definitely preferable to the artificial stuff
Oh, and welcome to the best forum

- Austin was definitely down on power at Spa this time, possibly as a result of back pressure from the second hand temporary exhaust I fitted just prior to the trip, only to find the baffles were all loose and sounding like a thousand vuvuzelas in a giant dustbin! AWFUL!! That will be remedied ASAP to return to the sound I love
