Hi Mike, is that an S one you are showing? If so look at the edges carefully, you will probably see saw marks on two features from TVR cutting it down? Would you agree? Could be the later cars are different in minor ways?

No saw marks Richard, but quite possibly from a later car and a little different to yours? Good luck with your Reliant one but the more I look at the Ebay photo the more differences I see!

Could it be possible TVR used modified Reliant initially but that source dried up or when production numbers increased it became cost effective to have something purpose made rather than pay a man to hacksaw them scratchchin

Yes, I would agree that would be a possibility and might have been a sensible way forward once TVR had the numbers. Not that difficult for the manufacturer to produce revised parts for a press tool. Certainly the fact that yours does not show the clear evidence of modification (that all three of mine do) might suggest that.

I may be adding a Reliant bonnet catch to my selection of 'research' bits!

Bugger! I am adding Reliant Scimitar to the crossed off part of the search list. Similar principle but that isnt the source! Where to look next I wonder?

Sorry guys. A bit more research phoneappears to confirm that the bonnet catch (the slider part not the pin) was indeed adapted by TVR but subsequently manufactured for them. Manufacture ceased some time ago. As far as I have been able to find out nobody has stock anymore, the last few have now gone (2 are on my desk! wink) and that is seen as it!
So, little or no chance of finding the origins (even if there was a chance of getting any as that was 25 years ago) to adapt, and no chance of new ones being made as matters stand. These have now joined the indicator lenses and PSA328 servos on the hens teeth register.frown

I am however going to study these new ones carefully nerdscratchchin and see if there might be other options.

Looks like these pins were used on lots of cars so it's anybody's guess where the catch plate came from.

Jaguar

Land Rover

Maybe THIS could be made to fit?

The catches appear to be hardened so unless your car has had a seriously hard life wear should be minimal/negligible?

The pins, if showing any wear can be turned a few degrees to bring "fresh metal" into contact with catches.

Then it's just a matter of careful alignment and adjustment imho smile

If the bonnet is not sitting right the pin won't enter the catch at 90 degrees.

It would certainly be good to know exactly which pin was the best choice. I did spot that some pins have different profiles at the tip and different depths for the recess into which the sliding latch goes. I have also looked at Landrover and at least one Jag and found the sliding latch part could not really be adapted. I also spotted the Merc one, interesting isnt it! I confess I have yet to make the effort to seek one out to check, but I will do so.

I have one of the last 'old stock' original parts in front of me. It looks simple but one aspect of the manufacture would not be at all easy to replicate.

I hear what you are saying Philpott but mine is an 88 car, with c100,000 miles. Furthermore I challenge anybody to get the bonnet lined up (laser measurement showed it isnt square by 3+cm!). Over the years the sliders have taken a beating and I have not been able to get consistent latching or unlatching.

Thanks to the guys at Millbrook on Sunday who came up with a few suggestions. As a result I cut out all the old white silicone and the outcome is quite dramatic. As you can see in the photos....

....the sliding part was clogged up with silicone and this was stopping the slider part moving all the way forward and fully engaging the pin.

Once it was all cleaned out the slide was able to move its full length of travel.

This gave an extra millimeter of travel but it has made all the difference.

I've just been out for a bounce round all our lovely South Bucks roads and it stayed shut. Even better, when I got home I was able to open it again laugh

So if you're still having this problem, get hold of some sharp blades and, ideally some old dentists' picks and scrapers, and get all that old crap out of the way and see what happens thumbup

I'm NOT saying this is a permanent fix, but it is fixed for now laugh

If you click this you get....

"The link you followed may have expired, or the Page may only be visible to an audience that you aren't in."

If it linked to the eBay advert mentioned above they have all sold.

Hi
It was not linked to an eBay advert... Within it there was a link to the following:

http://www.obsoletetvr.co.uk/product/s28u10022-bon...

Odd that the facebook link wouldn't work for you, when I click on it in this forum post it takes me to the TVR Buy, Sell and Swap group page?

Cheers
M
