Hi everyone,

I need to remove the Headlamps of my 1990 S2 to fit LHD ones. I have a copy of Stve Heath's bible which states 'refer to the Owners' Handbook to remove the external chrome trim', but I have no handbook.
HOW DO I GET ABOUT TO REMOVE THE EXTERNAL CHROME BIT WITHOUT DAMADGING ANYTHING?

Many thanks for your help.
Regards,
Geoffrey

Not sure if it will be the same as mine but rotate the chrome rim and see if a screw comes into sight. If there is one, undo it and the rim should pop off.

Crouch down and look at the headlamp head on - there may be a screw underneath the headlamp into the glassfibre, this holds on the chrome bezel with an l shaped bracket. There are various types though, I was told it was a mini one. Didn't for mine, founds some mgb ones at an autojumble that fit, but you have to fab up a bracket.

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for your suggestions. I'll have a try tomorrow.
I'll keep you posted on how I get on.
TVRees, thanks for the PDF Handbook. I bought them from Mini Spares LTD in the UK. Reference S4699B. Beware, they are sold as a pair (kit). I didn't realize that and ended up with 4 headlamps. If you're interested, I have a pair for sale.

Regards,

Geoffrey

The retaining screw is at 6 on clock face, out if sight until you get down at eye level. Even with that screw removed the outer ring does not just fall off and needs a bit of twist and a jiggle.

When I fitted new rings I replaced the metal bracket with a webbing strap (normally used to hold tall furniture to the wall). pictures and post here

Hi Smokey Boyer,

Thank you for that very interesting alternative. I'll have a look at that tomorrow.

Just to give another example of how these cars differ, mine has an access hole in the fibreglass directly below the headlight. The hole looks original, though I suspect it could be a modification as nobody else has mentioned it.
So, I simply put my arm in the wheel arch, feed the screwdriver and stainless self tapper through the access hole and into the chrome ring (which I have pre-drilled). Obviously, being right handed, one side is easier to do than the other!.

Access hole doubles up as a drain hole while washing the headlight cavity!

My S3C has the holes aswell, always assumed someone had drilled them once upon a time...

Haven't I seen a source of polished stainless ones somewhere? My chrome ones, replaced a couple of years ago, are already starting to go.
My S1 has a small strip of metal, bent into an L shape, rivetted to the rim and positioned at the bottom. A self tapper then holds this to the grp under the headlight. There is no access hole.

Hi everyone,

Inspection reveals, mine has the hole. Very handy which makes the job a real doddle.

However, on one headlamp there is 1 rectangular piece of metal (20mmm by 25mm) that is missing (there are 3 by headlamp). This holds the glass lens assembly to the inner chrome headlamp assembly.
Would anyone of you experts know where I can buy one of these?

Many thanks for your help.

Regards,

Geoffrey

I think these were the one I used, not as shiny shiny as chrome but nice enough and low maintenance
