Morning all!
I've had my S1 for a few weeks now, and one of its more annoying habits is that the bonnet keeps popping open!!
usually the right side.

When i close it its solid, cant be pulled up.

However as the chassis/body flexes, sometimes accel, sometimes braking, the thing will pop.
about 1 in 5 times, once the right has popped the left will follow some time later...
I can just see myself having to pull up rather quickly some time and the whole bonnet flipping open!!!!

both of the sliding catch things in the body seem to be fully against their "stops"

so, any advice?!

Its an alignment issue. I'd try slackening the tension on the striker springs slightly if you think they're aligned right.

I have been having similar problems with mine - also an S1 albeit modified.

The guys here suggested I try cleaning both catch mechanisms which I did ( manually, then with degreasers etc) and then relubricated them - they do hang on to the bonnet pins much better now although the drivers side does still let go occassionally.

I would try giving the catches a good clean first so that bars will slide fully shut - it has improved mine no end.

What state are your hinges in?

If they are worn, loose, generally cream crackered that won't help scratchchin

Otherwise it's a matter of patiently adjusting the striker pins...... carefully or you could end up with a bonnet that won't open at all!

I've tried almost everything over the years to fix this. I've have new hinges, new pins, modified pins, new springs, I even have new sodcensoreding bonnet for fecks sake! And nothing has worked. The only bit I haven't changed is the catch so maybe if a source of new ones comes up I'll give that a go. BTY, I have tried adjusting the bonnet hinges as well.

Any and all suggestions welcome thumbup

Those sliders should have a very positive action and there is s fair sized overlap on the original pin. If the set up is original then something isnt working right. Sliders badly worn or deformed downwards by pins hitting them? The deformed part stopping the sliders moving far enough. Overtight or sticking release cables preventing the slider moving properly (which was the case on mine)?
Regrettably the source of new sliders appears to have dried up, they have disappeared from parts lists and enquiries have revealed just two from one supplier (and I bought those!)

The overlap is limited by the shaft of the pin when it's engaged so even if there is a little bit of crud in the end of the catch, so long as the slider touches the shaft of the pin it will be as fully engaged as it can be.

Well worn after 23 years of use but not deformed as far as I can see.

Not on mine.

Can you tell us what you ordered? Are they used on another car? When in the closed position, what is the distance between the end of the slider and the forward lip of the catch? See photo.

Hi Joe, I bought the last two that Obsolete TVR had in stock and, as far as I could find out, nobody else has stock. I would be happy for someone to prove me wrong.

Source? That is a question I have looked at many times. I have even bought a couple of different ones of ebay to try and identify ours, with no luck. The early ones at least were clearly adapted by TVR from something else as they have clear hacksaw marks. But what?? Very puzzled but suspect might have had a commercial application so difficult to trace.
