I recently checked the front wishbone arm suspension bushes of my S2 and they were in a pretty bad condition.

Rather than paying the very inflated prices for new commercially available polyurethane bushes, I decided to make my own.

If you would like to know how I did this, just click here ... PU-BUSHES ... for a report, with lots of pictures. read

What would have been better would be to improve the design by doing away with the cotton-reel setup, finish the bushes flush with the ends of the wishbone boss and then turning up some Nylon or Delryn thrust washers, as is done with the Powerflex Chiamera, Cerbera and Griffith kits. It's the only criticism I have of the Powerflex S bushes, of which I've fitted many over the years.

Good work though! Wish I had time on my hands hehe

For the S cars, the thrust wahsers would need to be > 4mm thick, since the wishbone boss is quite a bit shorter than the gap between the fixing plates on the chassis.
What advantage would the Nylon offer over using PU to fill the gap ? I would have thought that the harder Nylon (hardness 70 ShD) would wear more quickly than the PU.

On the Chims there are two different sizes supplied. One's about 2-2.5mm and the other about 0.5mm. Ideally you want a least a thicker one on both sides, but you can take up slack with the thinner shims. 4mm is quite a bridge though, I'll give you that. Suppose you could allow a section of bush to protrude from the arm for 2mm, and then add a 2mm washer.

Advantages? Well, the ends of the bush are the bit that wears more often than not. With a replaceable thrust washer, you wouldn't need to renew the bush, only the washer. The Chimaeras and Griffiths have a similar layout. Also makes it much easier to fit the bush, though yours might be easier than the Powerflex ones, which are a total sod!

Thanks Richard, I'm convinced.

Now I understand how a washer could be used here to make an improvement. I can cut off another 2mm from each side of the half bush and then there would be space for a washer. I'll certainly give it a try.

Again, thanks for sharing your idea beer

No problem. Send us a couple when you've done a batch and I might think about using them instead of the Powerflex ones on our refurbs. You could definitely improve the trailing arm versions!
