Just bought an S2 with fabulous history, low mileage, but only average oil temperature so decided to fit mains, big ends, ARPS and oil pump. When we stripped out the mains which were standard ford originals we found that whoever assembled the engine had put a normal bearing where a thrust bearing should have been leaving only one thrust to control the crank end float might explain the wear on the big end shells. Good news is, oil pressure is now tremendous and the sump doesn't leak anymore result

That's quite common. There's no need for both the upper and lower shells to have a thrust face. I guess manufacturers are saving money.

the engine should only need as you say thrust on one side of the journal in this case it had neither, apologies if I didn't explain myself clearly

It all depends on who produces the bearings. I buy the shells that are one piece, ie with an integral thrust. The illustration may have been correct at the time but things have moved on. Personally I see it as penny pinching but it seems to work ok with just a 'half shell' thrust.

Crikey, that crank must have been bouncing around between the gearbox and timing cover. Could you hear it?
