I recently took my car for an MOT (the first in my ownership) and whilst it passed first time with no advisories the tester did comment on the fact that my battery was only held in place with plastic straps akin to large cable ties - it was secure enough but as he rightly pointed out - if the straps were to let go, it would cause a right mess!

He suggested I go for one of the universal bracket set-ups available on a well known auction site. Would these not foul the inside of the bonnet?

I just wondered how others had their batteries secured.

Cheers

I used both of these solutions on mine.

1. Ratchet strap around the battery and tray it sits in, holding everything together

which was then replaced with

2. Universal battery clamp from Halfords.

Bigish (appropriately sized for the job), I think I would use something more sensible were it under the bonnet and capable of doing something bad if it moved though.

It has attempted to escape once, by breaking the battery tray and the car. The cable ties were just fine smile

Well, sort of. There's a nice thick red wire and a nice thick black wire to hold it down too.

Mine-ratchet strap on mine. No issue at MOT. Used to have a proper Heath Robinson clamp arrangement when I got it, but it looked bloody awful.

Nylon strap with a cam-lock buckle - never been an issue, either at MOT time or during a spirited run out.

Nylon cam lock, colour to match suspension!

MOT guy commented positively as there is NO movement at all, unlike the small base clamps which dont hold anything like as well.

Just to clarify, it is a cam lock strap but I fitted a simple second (plastic) buckle off an old rucsac strap to make the end of the strap neater.

Thanks guys, very helpful.

I quite like the look and neatness (is that even a word? confused) of the nylon straps. Time to get searching!

This is how mine's secured in my S3... For ages just had the one strap but added a second one recently - Belt and Braces!

As I've just relocated my battery to the boot, I've got a recently black powder coated battery tray, bracket, pull down rods and wing nuts spare if anybody wants them... biggrin
