Project 1. Thanks to redV8S for the tip on this

It will re-locate the ignition module to the bulkhead where the expansion used to be. Hopefully this will cure cure one of the possible causes of the intermittent cutting out problem I've been experiencing.

It was £49.00 including delivery but as the kit includes a Lucas OE ignition module it's not bad value. I'm going to move the coil to the same location while I'm at it so I'm going to need an extra long king lead; does anyone know there I can get one?

Project 2. The second, and more likely cause of the cutting out is a knackered speedo transducer. I've had the original one rebuilt by Speedycables (eventually wink ). This was £117.00, which might seem a lot, but it's considerably cheaper than a new one.

Project 3. Unfortunately the fuel gauge sender is going to have to come out again as it keeps lying to me.I seems to recall someone posting some time ago about a source of replacement floats. Does anyone know where I might get one from?

Thanks thumbup

- Put the engine back in
- Re-fit all the fuel lines, brake pipes, etc.
- Finish everything else off in preparation for the body going back on...

Then, in the Spring, put the body back on, re-fit seats etc, get car fully checked over & MOT's & then...driving...woohoo...biggrin

Mine is a bit "tappety", I put it down to original design and maybe the Piper cam doesn't help? Couple of years ago now it seemed to get a lot worse, turned out to be the crank hitting the dip stick. once the end fell off the dip stick it returned to normal! smile

Joe

I got one from my local (old school) motor factors; he had a number of them made to different lengths. I'm sure you can find someone local to you or on the Web thingy, but if not I am happy to pick one up for you.

I've been advised that Piper 270 cams are noisy (for reasons that don't fully make sense to me yet, but reasons all the same) and being that it gave no power gain whatsoever (in fairness I wasn't expecting one, and others who know the engines also said it wouldn't gain from it) I'll pop a standard cam back in to see if that helps the noise issue. I'm also running a solid alloy timing gear set, which apparently can chatter a bit. Irritating as the reason I opted for alloy over the steel was because apparently the steel one is noisy, and doubly irritating as I only had to change it as I dropped the original and didn't want to risk putting a weakened gear back on.

Pretty sure it's not the dipstick, but I'll pull it out while it's running all the same hehe

So I'm going standard cam and pulley (have been gifted a used set in good nick) with a hopeful possibility of turbocharging it and creating a TVR ST, if I can source the parts. I could do with falling in love with it again, and that would probably do the trick!

All I need to no other manufacturers to use the 'ST' moniker and I'm all good. I'm pretty sure it hasn't been used, not by any major automotive players at least.....

I'd be tempted to buy a cheapo endoscope off ebay (about £6 if you use a USB laptop version and wait for snail delivery from China) and have a look in that outrigger so see if it really is terminal. I suspect so but sometimes surprises occur.

"tappety" noise is all about "ramp angles" and clever stuff I believe, the way the cam lobe and follower act together?

Think it was the Piper website that suggested possible 10-15 bhp gain, mine hit 184.9 (185 would have been nice) on the rollers but it is a 2.9 so maybe responds differently and of course has timing chain rather than gears.
