There is very little discussion on here about uprating the Cologne engines, I believe the biggest "hold back" is the induction system design rather than the heads?

Think most people accept them for what they are, an almost unburstable good old "thumper" and if that's not enough they buy something with a V8 smile

Phillpot's V6 has been Dyno'd at 185BHP and my V8S at 198BHP. How much do you think the extra 13BHP is worth? OK, the V8S probably has more torque at 218ft/lbs but again, what would be the price of getting that out of the V6?

Before making any decision I would look at the extensive information in the Burton Power catalogue. They do comment on the potential for tuning these angines and, as the foremost Ford engine tuning company, their advice is very relevant.

I would of thought if heads done, cam and ECU the power from the V6 would get the 198bhp mark ( Anyone on here done it? ) Cheaper if doing yourself if not then costly to do as I think a better cam is around £400 and then its a engine out job to have fitted. Heads £££? Then ECU and time mapping.

Mike has already had a cam change though so shows what a cam change can offer.

That said, the cost of modifying the 2.9 Cologne to give 200bhp could be speant on other things to make better use of the existing bhp.

Anything is possible given time and money but as the old saying goes "There aint no replacement for displacement".

You might well be able to get V8 power and torque out of a V6 but (assuming normally aspirated) where in the rev range would it be and how driveable would the car be? On the Euro Tours the standard tune V6's have no trouble keeping up with and in many cases out-pacing the V8's. Especially as we have to stop for petrol so often laugh

But, as Joe says, not a whole lot of difference in the real World....... but just a bit more power up the hill out of Eau Rouge would be nice smile

It is even more difficult with the 2.8 where firstly the exhaust breathing is worse and secondly the K Jetronic isnt quite as easy to retune for a greater demand. However Burton Tune have given me advice and some changes are being made to cam, valve springs, port matching, balancing etc to try to get a better power delivery (rather than major outright power gains) from the engine. That is when I get the time to complete the build of the new engine!
I learnt a lot from rallying about the improvements to be made in power delivery by very careful 'blueprinting' of an engine even when there were strict limits on the tuning mods than could be made. A 10% gain would be possible on most unmodified older engines. Clearly, on modern engines, where the components are more 'optimised' that sort of gain would not be achievable.

Forgot to add, Phillpot, what cam did you use and did you make any change to the valves themselves?

Is the v8 power at the wheels. ? Shouldn't it be well over 200 if at the fly. I thought like 220 -230 ? Or were those TVR press figures.?

Thanks

...now there's a gauntlet through down Joe...

....but there are loads of v8s to chose from... Even those slow old Chims....but V6s are rarer (across all fast cars) and to make a V6 sound good takes a bit more style....and V6 cars do not live in fear of the torque...so we tend to go around corners faster....and I I proved years ago in a 1300cc Triumph Herald estate, speed on the straight is partly due to power, but mainly due to speed of exit......and not stopping for coffee regularly helps as well.. wink

Crossed wires? My numbers are at the rear wheels anyway.

It must be the way Mike drives his. It just goes like it has 185bhp! wink
