Hi there

I was thinking (in a few years) or trying to build a short stroke rover V8, so I did some research and found out about the TVR V8S with the 2.0 rover V8, anyone know where I could get a crankshaft and con rods for such an engine or would they have to be custom made?

There is a previous thread on here about the 2.0 V8 made for the Italian market, which suggests there were at least 3 still around in Italy a few years ago.

Wikipedia says'

2-litre V8S

The TVR 2-litre V8S was a 2 litre supercharged version of the V8S - this was created for the Italian market in response to their import taxation based on engine capacity. The engine was a modified 3.5 litre Rover V8 fitted with a smaller-throw crank to reduce the engine capacity, retaining the 88.9 mm bore but with a short stroke of 40.25 mm. This meant a displacement of 1,998 cc (2.0 L), with a compression rate of 8.0:1. Lucas electronic fuel injection was fitted, along with an intercooled Eaton supercharger. All of this produced 233 PS (171 kW; 230 bhp) at 6,200 rpm and 266 N·m (196 lb·ft) at 3,700 rpm. Performance was on par with the bigger V8s, with a top speed of 232 km/h (144 mph) and 0–100 km/h coming up in 6.5 seconds. Ventilated disc brakes were fitted up front, and the 2-litre V8 also got adjustable ride height hydraulic shocks.[1] There is at this time only one known to exist.

So I don't think there's much chance of anyone having tooling etc. but at least the dimensions above may give you a start - Adding the supercharger may be an even bigger challenge..

I have found the stroke length the same way, I was more looking for the connecting rod lengths. I'm guessing the rods would be similar to the standard RV8 crank just with a smaller stroke

This begs the question "Why?" confused

I thought the 2.0litre V8S engine had special reduced bore liners and smaller dia pistons as well. IIRC, the standard V8S bore was 94mm, with a stroke of 71mm.

If you're interested in small V8s, Daimler made their lovely 2.5 litre as fitted in their SP250 saloon and the pretty little SP250 Dart. Getting scarce and very expensive now.

There are also Youtube clips of "the World's smallest V8" which are worth viewing smile

Why? Well just something a bit different, Bowler bore and stroke it up to 5.0 and up to 600hp and I just think that a low displacement, high revving RV8 would just sound cool. Daimler V8 age getting scarce and I'm not sure on them

I wouldn't be reducing the bore I would probably use just a standard RV8 block and pistons, maybe a forged/billet set

Short stroke crank = longer rods to still bring piston to top of bore?

Would imagine parts are as rare as "rocking horse sh*t"

But yes, why??? just because you can?

I thought so, it's just a case of how much longer, and I thought they would be anyway, and yeah pretty much just because it's different to what pretty much all RV8 engine developer which is go big bore/big stroke. I'm not looking to throw it into a big heavy car like a bowler engine into a Range Rover classic so it doesn't have to make stupid power. As I've said, it's a future project so it'll most likely be an old triumph as that's my car preference

71.00 - 40.25 = 30.75 x 0.5 = 15.375mm if figures above are correct?

OP, whilst the stroke may be short the rods will need to be long otherwise you'll have overweight pistons. You may be able to use honda rods or something japanese and with a small journal. Guess it depends on how much you can offset grind the crank and what rod angle you'd like.

If you really get stuck but are determined to proceed with this project I could cast you a crank in sg nodular but you'd have to find a machinist to grind it etc.

That won't be necessary as it'll be a few years till I even try and get it underway, and I'll see what I can do

But thank you very much

Talking of small V8's, many years ago there was a a chap who raced a Hillman Imp with a V8 I believe his Father built from two imp engines. The shell had also been cut in half lengthwise and widened, 10" or so from memory!

Hi All
There is the V8 Hayabusa

http://www.holeshot-racing.co.uk/index.php/engines...

Might cost less that trying to re make the 2.ol rover V8

I knew they were expensive but I read it was 17k for the engine from radical but 23k and then there's the gearbox.

Was just going to do short throw crank and longer rods and a cam, maybe either carbs or EFI

That and it's easier to convince my mum that it won't be too powerful if I say it's a 2.0 rather than a 3.5-4.0

Or you could buy an original - if you have VERY deep pockets.

I once saw a Honda 400/4 with two 400/4 engines grafted together to make a V8. It was a work of art! As Ian Drury sang, "there ain't arf been some clever bds"

Tbf it's a very rare car, in virtually unused original condition. Considering what's paid for 'other' collectables it's not extortionate.

Yeah, it's very rare and if I even could afford it, I would keep the engine in and run it very little
