Duratec V6... Has it ever been done?
Discussion
Thing is, if you're thinking of dropping in another V6 (I can't blame you, I'd quite fancy doing it myself) why go for the Duratec? It's an average engine - neither good nor bad. There are other V6s out there which would give you more bang.
Or, if it's as a base for an engine you'd tune, I would have thought a KV6 would be better. Lighter and more compact than a Ford lump, more powerful in standard tune and aside from the stupid plastic inlet issues, a more simple package to start with.
As someone's already pointed out though, I'd just get a V8S.

I am doing one now. Well, I'm still refurbing the chassis at the moment (body off). 1990S3V6. Once that's finished, it should get interesting ! My engine is the last variant of the AJ30 unit as used in the Stype & X350.
I can't see that the Rover V6 is more compact, being as the AJ is a 60o Vee, and the Rover is a 90o Vee. And 240bhp is enough for me ☺.

Ah you're quite right, I forgot it was a 90degree V6. It's the lightest and shortest V6 mass produced in recent years - I was getting muckin fuddled! Those features are no good if it don't fit in't rails.I am doing one now. Well, I'm still refurbing the chassis at the moment (body off). 1990S3V6. Once that's finished, it should get interesting ! I'm sat here contemplating fitting a high-revving 4-pot to mine, in the S2000 mould. Really. I've even got such an engine kicking around not doing much.

And don't forget a tuned version of the Duratec/AJ V6 is used in the Noble M12 in bi-turbo form at around 350bhp. Oh, they even did a 425bhp version in the M400.
TB.
A fair bit of money spent on that one though. TB.

I just remember having a Mondeo ST200, and finding it was massively thirsty, yet not exactly quick. And that was after I'd sorted the IMRC issues too. Compared with my 156 V6, or the MG ZS180 I had afterwards, it was positively slow. Sure if you remove some of the weight and by putting it in the S then you'll see better results than 1400kg of Mondeo, but in standard form they're not more powerful than your average 2.9 Cologne, yet a fair bit of work to fit one.
My only thinking was if you were going to the trouble of fitting another V6, go for a really good one, or one that brings new tricks to the party.
Hmmmmm.....Alfa Busso V6....that's got me thinking!

Standard 2.9 Cologne (12valve) = 155bhp/130lb-ish
Standard 2.9 AJ30 (vv version) = 240bhp/216lb
.
Standard V8S in good trim; 200bhp & 220ft/lbs at the rear wheels.Standard 2.9 AJ30 (vv version) = 240bhp/216lb
.
I'm all for technical challenges, but it's a hell of a lot of effort to get something which is already available. Would be fun to do though, and you know the chassis/brakes & suspension are upto the job.

You'll be lucky! Sub 20 most of the time.phillpot said:

Fair point, but factor in the cost of the conversion and that's an awful lot of petrol vouchers that would get you a long way even in a V8S.v8s4me said:

Then factor in the average price difference between a V6 and a V8 in similar condition.... And, of course, the fun, the challenge, the interest, the enjoyment, the satisfaction etc. etc. in such a project!
we could all list out endless engines that "could" be fitted but i like the Ford/Jag V6 idea, a sensible but not mental power increase using an engine that bears some relationship with the one you're replacing .

Mmmm..
Or, for balance:Standard 2.9 AJ30 (vv version) = 240bhp/216lb
Mmmm..
Standard 2.9 Cologne (12v) = 160-165bhp (have dyno'd a few and never pulled lower with a 2.9)
Standard 2.5 V6 24v Duratec = 167bhp (book figure, but the last ST24 I ran up managed 163bhp. You can expect 120bhp if the IMRC is nadged. Best was a Noble M10 which I fitted an ST200 UIM, runners and throttle body to - that made 182bhp)
Depends how much money you want to spend I guess.

200bhp at the wheels? Steady on, they barely make 200bhp at the fly I'm all for technical challenges, but it's a hell of a lot of effort to get something which is already available. Would be fun to do though, and you know the chassis/brakes & suspension are upto the job.
I agree though. The V8S is a riot to drive, and you know you'd get your money back at the end, whereas unless you plan on never selling, a modified one isn't going to be worth as much, unless you get lucky enough to find someone who wanted that exact spec.
