If you've ever taken your steering column out you probably noticed two (very heavy) steel spacers on the top mount. Centre in photo.

In my "handy tat" box I found two (four actually) alluminium fuel pump drive dogs from an industrial oil burner, the sort of thing everyone has lying around. left in photo

Five minutes with a hacksaw and file and I had a pair of super lightweight spacers. Right in photo

Iknow, I need to get out more getmecoat

Well done Mike, I'm impressed...keep adding lightness!

Polished alluminium will be fine, stainless is far too heavy wink

No point in me making aluminium spacers all the while I eat so much!! I was only thinking the other day that when I get in my car the weight goes up by a greater order of magnitude than I'd like!!

biggrin All the more reason Martin!
You need to add as much lightness as possible. Try eating lots more light snacks. wink

That's why I drive with my shirt off with the roof down - Reduced weight! And I also no longer wear my mid-calf length white socks with my open toe sandals as I figured that was extra weight too!!

I find that 15 denier nylons are a lot lighter than calf length socks, and I have also swapped my open toed sandals for pink fluffy mules. wink
