Hello everyone I've been on hiatus, the s1 has fought me every step of the way, but after a break and then a spell of renewed enthusiasm it's starting to come together, new outriggers rear disk brake conversion and lsd fitted, still plenty to do but the body's back on engine runs. just a bit of fettling before a crafty pre mot test drive, quick question I know it's been asked before but anyone recommend a replacement oil pressure sender? used the search function and the recommended ebay item (think it was hose fittings uk???) is nearly a grand! Also I bought a sump drain valve anyone used one I got sick of rounding the bolt off.

I think sellers do that when out of stock? Rather than delete the item they put the price up to silly money.

I'd be very wary of anything sticking out that low down? Single hex socket and rounding off shouldn't be an issue.

I suspect 99% of drain plugs are way over tightened scratchchin

I've got a couple of spare sump plugs but thought I would have a go with the valve it sticks out horizontal so hoping it won't be a problem

That's for an oil light, not a gauge wink

Was the oil pressure sensor/gauge a TVR addition, not on the original Ford engine ?

No, the oil pressure sensor is not a standard Ford. The oil pressure gauge was made by Stewart Warner and needs the right sender to work as it should. The recommended one is available from Neil at ML Performance Parts (he really knows his TVR's) but it isnt cheap. Given the price of a damaged engine I bit the bullet and bought the right one.

Hi Mikel,
It's good to hear that you've started back on your S with renewed enthusiasm! thumbup
It's common to lose heart during a restoration, but the nearer you get to completion, the greater the desire & determination to complete it becomes. smile

Oil pressure sensor/sender: I fitted the Hose Fittings UK item, IIRC it was 1/8" NPT*, 0-100psi and cost just under £15.00 incl P/P.
I just had to run an earth wire from the extra terminal to a nearby chassis earth stud, and change the female bullet connector to a ring tag on the feed wire. It has worked well since I fitted it nearly four years ago.
As Phillpot says, the daft price may be because they are currently out of stock, so it may be worth asking them if they are likely to get more in soon.
Failing that, try Car Builder Solutions, they supply all sorts of generic stuff at a fair price.

Sump drain valve: I wouldn't even consider it nono Too vulnerable!! Standard female hex sump plug and a decent copper or nylon washer for me every time!
Good luck and please keep us updated with your progress.

  • The engine block oil gallery tapping is 1/4" NPT ( I think ) with a 1/4" to 1/8" reducer to fit the original sender
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year of 'S'ing driving
Glen.

I've copied this from the fuel gauge thread: could help with oil pressure gauges?

Many of us seem to have the gauge/sender matching problem (and not just fuel gauges).
Has anybody tried this Gauge Wizard?
I saw it demonstrated at the Shepton Mallet Restoration Show, and it seemed to do the business. He seems a nice guy, his website has lots of info, and he claims to do custom auto electronics as well.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

You still need a working sender though Mentall. And if the sender is working, you don't need the Wizard. It's an unnecessary complication, and AutoAndy would quickly point out, it's EXTRA WEIGHT!!! yikes

There are a lot of these available on eBay for close to a tenner.

Does anyone know how to choose the right one ?

eBay

I suppose it's down to the min and max pressure of the oil in the block and the resistance (Ohms) measured at the different pressures.

For the one in the link .....

Output: 10-180 ohms resistance.
Input: 0-80 psi.

looks like a lot of those Ebay senders are marked up G = gauge and WK = oil light ?

This one is clearly marked G and earth, which is the type quite a few on here have used I believe although description says G + WK?

As for being the correct range/resistance etc. unless your very clever, and know how to work these electrizical things out, you pays your money and takes your chance (or pay the price and buy from a TVR specialist)!

Depending how finickity you are the actual reading is not that important, it's knowing where the needle usually "sits" and being aware of any major change scratchchin

This might help ...
The Haynes manual, page 2C-1 says this :

Lubrication system
Oil pressure (SAE 10W/30 oil at 80°C/176°F):
At 750 rpm . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1.0 bar
At 2000 rpm . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.5 bar
Oil pressure relief valve opening pressure . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4.0 to 4.7 bar
Oil pressure warning light switch setting . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0.3 to 0.5 bar

1 bar = 14.5 psi

i wouldn't worry too much. I fitted one thats a bit wrong and ll it did was read a bit lower than the previous one......

I know the pressure hadn't changed, just that the gauge had. If bothered I could have inserted a small resister in-line, but I'm not.
