Is this correct?

No raised thread issues and it is definitely 7/16" UNF.
The only query now is this; when I tried to tighten the nut, the spigot(?) on the ball joint (the bit that goes into the arm on the upright) turned as well ponce the nylon collar bit. I put a jack under the ball joint so it was under a little bit of tension and the nut tightened up. Is this normal?

That's known in the trade as the "French way".Real men (i.e. Brits) pull up on the track rod to get the taper to wedge tight enough to tighten the nut
Whatever happened to castellated nuts and split pins................ :reminisce smiley:

Yeah! Better than poncey nylon collars eh Mike? Mind you, if we split pinned in that fashion on aircraft in the mob, we'd have been shot! Real men (i.e. Brits) pull up on the track rod to get the taper to wedge tight enough to tighten the nut
