As per title, looking for a good useable engine to put in my 280 asap while I rebuild it's original engine.

TVR Glen has one which sounds good on 34k miles but he wants 895 for it which is more than I'd like to spend (That would go a good way to rebuilding mine) a few on eBay but miles away or not ideal.

Ideally somewhere near Dudley (where I work in the week) or Buckingham (home)

Have cash waiting and can collect as long as you have a crane.

Just when you want one there isnt one for sale (at least not at a realistic price)! There have been a few concerns about stuff from TVR Glen (who has nothing to do with 'our' esteemed Glenrobbo!) and I did recently spot an engine reconditioning company selling one for not much more than that one. I will ask a couple of people but you might have to wait a few days (hopefully)for the next one to turn up on ebay.

Yes I had read a few posts on Glen but wasn't sure of his activity on here so thought I'd wait to see others comments on buying an engine from him. Annoyingly, there have been several sell on eBay lately for not a lot of money at all when I look in completed listings.

Was hoping to find one I could put in this weekend and get it running again. As I'm keen to enjoy it this spring and don't want it parked up.

Give Tickover a call. They do second hand engines and will pallet and ship for not much.

Checked with a breaker friend of mine, he is rather at the 'late' end of the market and hasnt got anything but he did recommend trying a search via one of the breaker websites like Parts24/7. Breakers often remove and store engines and have lots lying around, and many are not bothered about advertising them, there are old engines lying around all over the country. Odds are there will be a 2.8 Cologne somewhere near you!

This is a 2.8i. Aldershot. Snap it up at that price.

Puzzled now, the diesel was 2.5 not 2.8 and a different engine entirely. That certainly looks like a 2.8i Cologne. Worth a ring as only 60-80 miles from you?

It is petrol but it's carb, I just called him. Not interchangeable are they?

Good question. All the Jetronic injection is bolt on and would go on either, provided the porting on the heads is the same. I am sure I heard of someone putting carbs on an injection engine for some obscure reason. Probably worth a quick ring to Burton Power, especially if you are planning to buy bits from them, asking them if it could be used as a temp engine while yours is out..

That is great news (especially about the beer!!), crossed fingers it is OK to keep you going. You are certainly a quick worker on the car, the days of me doing an engine change in a day are long gone!!
Good luck and keep us all posted.
Bring it to the S club meet?

Hi..
Based on multiple previous 2.8 ownership. Personally I would fit a new water pump, but get the right one & one with a cast iron impeller not a bent bit of tin. Be very careful removing the bolts especially the T-stat. Buy the best quality inlet manifold gasket you can buy & tighten the manifold down slowly over a couple of days using the correct torque setting/sequence. Fit a new sump gasket & crank seals while its out & easy to access. And if its done any miles, a new oil pump &/or pump driveshaft. Fit new head to exhaust manifold studs unless they are sound.
If it has been standing for 4 years, best to wash the rocker shafts to clear the journals of dried sludge, then squirt new oil into them. I've probably forgotten something, but all worthwhile & preferable to do it now !

So picked engine up, had a good look at it and decided I would be better off cracking on and getting mine rebuilt asap rather than throw this one in without doing all the sensible things to do while an engine is out and then it letting me down. Or spending loads on getting this one in then to take it out again.

So stripped mine fully and found some more delights! Oil pickup slightly blocked, pistons all had bits of valve seat on them.

Luckily the block and crank look OK and the heads and pistons from the other engine should get me back and running with just the "wearing parts" replaced . . . .and a fast Rd cam and head Polish and valve seats and oil pump and and and you get the picture. . .
I have sent the engine to the chap who's going to do the head work as a minimum and possibly put it all back together for me, will see what his verdict is tomorrow hopefully.

So thanks again for your help and advise and I'll keep you posted on progress.

Yep! A few more bits in the sump and some in the top of the pistons, testament to the engine as it was still going pretty well and the block looks ok

If you can make one good engine out of the two then it will have been a bargain. If you get stuck then get back in touch. You now know the weaknesses in the engines and what to look for first.
There are relatively few differences in the 2.8 during its production run but, apart from the possibility that one had a camshaft with smaller journals, check that the 'spigot' bearing at the rear end of the crankshaft is the same...dont fit the wrong one!
There are two different types of sump gasket arrangements that I know of, and the sumps are not readily interchangeable.
Check that the heads have exactly the same rocker box mountings, they should have unless a very early head is fitted.
When you first start the rebuilt engine, do so on 'flushing' oil, there are bound to be some small bits left somewhere.
Good luck.

So, I've been a bit quiet as I decided not to rush and put a second hand engine in as by the time I did the bits I ought to I'd have wasted money I could spend on doing a proper job on my engine.
So I dropped it off at a local engine guy who has a good reputation locally to check it over and tell me what I needed and the good news is the with the two good second hand heads everything else is OK so its getting all new wearing parts, rings, shells etc, valve seats and light port/Polish, new clutch etc. Then the exciting bit, I've gone for Burtons fast road CAM kit too. The chap that has checked it over and will do the head work doesn't want too much to put it all back together again so I'm going to let him do the whole job. Should get it back ready to re fit next weekend. Which gives me enough time to clean up the bits of chassis I can get too while engine is out and give it a blast of shutz/wax oil to keep it good for years to come. Also tidy up and paint sump, rockers coolant tank etc to tidy up under the bonnet.
The only thing I really could do with is a tubular manifold for the nearside . . . As someone has changed one side and after making a mess of the head doing so didn't bother with the other side! Any ideas, a pair I've found online are very expensive! Annoyingly I bet the other side to mine is sat doing nothing, but I don't have any previous owner details.
