Do the sidelights and hazard lights (things that don't need ignition on) work?

If so I'd plump for that "old Chestnut", the yellow connector

Had time to look into it a bit more, yes the hazards work but I think the switch is a bit iffy.

The horn I tested yesterday and it was working fine but when tested this evening it cut the battery ignition light out so I will have a better look under the steering column in the morn I think I have a earth problem.

I will also check the yellow switch.

Many thanks

I've seen one alarm installation which turned out to be 'earthed' via the throttle cable because the installer was used to working on steel bodied cars. If you have an alarm fitted, bear it in mind as another potential source of wonky behaviour.

Wonky behaviour, yep I certainly have some of that,

1, When I turn on the ignition the speedometer dial does a move around the dials, even though originally it turned out I had forgot to reconnect it, but having connected it its still does.

2. When I try to check the reverse lights the ignition light goes out and I get a clicking from the passenger foot well, still working on that one!

3. When I try the horn indicators and wipers they work sometimes and not others,

Now having had a look at the wires under the left side dash and the wires around the ignition barrel I am leaning towards either a rewire or a auto electrician coming to sort it.

Both of which will be extremely difficult to sort here in Spain.

However, I have time today and I am heading back to the problem torch and patient at the ready!! God I hate electric problems!!!

Looks like its pointing to the alarm system,

The clicking is coming from the Motion sensor box that also looks like its connected to most of the electrics and I would suggest has been in the past a problem due to lots of tape wrapped around it..

Just been on E Bay and although the alarm was fitted in 03 u can still buy them and the parts so all is not lost, its a Microscan AN 214.

If the reverse switch wiring has chaffed through the insulation and left the conductors exposed, this can easily short out against the gearbox/chassis. Depending which wire is shorted, it might only be noticeable when the 'box is in reverse.

No not a short, all day today I have put the rest of the car back together.

I now have all lights indicators horn etc etc working.

I thought I wonder if the alarm is reacting tho the circuits being incomplete so have put everything back together.

Worse thing about it is the alarm also seems to be working perfectly. It arms Disarms goes off etc etc but I still cannot turn the car over, I must be missing something I just cannot get to the bottom of what that is!!

I will post a couple of pics to bring you up to date with the build.

Funnily enough I had one of those once,,,,,, Well the wife did!!!

Must admit I do like my colours.

In all honesty I have changed it since that pic the side tubes are now back to black because they showed at the bottoms and it just did not work.

I have a mechanic mate coming around 2morrow to sort the starting problem so fingers crossed.

I will of course let all know what the problem was even if it was my fault, fingers crossed its not.smile

Well finally got the problem sorted, luckily for me it still took a while even with a mechanic to nail it down.

The problem was two things, one, the earth braid to the battery was faulty making intermittent problems throughout the car electrics. Although must admit even when I was trying to get another one from breakers and shops they were asking me what was wrong with it because it looked perfect,

Two, and I must take the blame for this one, a small black power lead had been wrapped and tucked under the alarm box by some git with a fading memory and a bit of an OCD problem with keeping things tidy. !! This was the wire that connected the fuel pump...

Anyway the car fired up with no leaks and after a couple of attempts to circulate the coolant throughout the new rad and pipes it cut in with the electric fan and all was well.

All I have to do now is work out the wires to the volts clock on the dash get one of these bonnet adapters made by somebody, god that bonnet is a pain! and enjoy some Spanish roads.

Many thanks to everybody who assisted me without your help it would not have been possible.

Regards
