Have had the MX5 mirrors fitted for a couple of years now but no matter what I do to the little grub screw the mirrors won't stay tight so when I get above 60 (ish!) they fold back in. Anybody got any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jeremy

Are the grub screws actually unscrewing, or just slipping against whatever they are supposed to secure to?

I think it's the latter as they don't tighten any further.

try removing the screws and either renew or grind / file a point to the end and refit,

Mark the point where the grub-screw bites and centre punch that point. Get a drill bit with the same taper as your grub-screw and drill a very shallow hole, no more than a countersink really. The point of the grub-screw will sit the "hole"; no more slipping. Or for a more permanent fix, so long as you're sure where you want the mirror to be, drill a hole the same size as the grub-screw and wind it into the hole. Definitely no more moving thumbup

Can't quite visualise the setup, but is it possible to remove the thing the grub screw are supposed to retain (mirror mounting pillar?) and create a small detent in the surface the grub screws are trying to engage with?

Edit: What he said.

Makes sense to me. However I am puzzled:

I have Mk1 MX5 mirrors and I am not dependent on a grub screw? The tension is created by a spring which has a tensioning nut surely? There are so many early MX5's still running that there are kits available on ebay to restore the working parts of the assembly. I bought new stainless internals for mine. Must look and see if I have a picture somewhere.

Cup point grub screws are far more effective than single point screws.

the link is just an example, have no idea what size you'd require

Thanks for the suggestions-think the mirrors are going to have to come off for closer inspection!
