Just got a bit bored with the whole LM thing and have decided not to go this year, which would have been a straight 36. Tickets are almost sold, hotel is almost unbooked. You know what, for me, it's never been the same since the new pits were built and 962s stopped racing.

Looking forward to watching it all on TV and listening to Radio LM. I might miss being there but I won't miss all the grief and expense.

What are your experiences of doing this?

Regret, mostly.

I skipped 2014 and watched more racing by being at home. However, the atmosphere was not the same. I was tired and bored of it all. Needless to say, I was the first among my group to book 2015 and 2016.
I actually really missed being there. And sometimes you have to do this to appreciate what the event actually gives.

I'm not sure I get the "grief" part - what have you been struggling with?

Expense is your call - you can afford/justify it or you can't.

I've been 18 times since 1995. 2011 is the only year I've missed since 2000 and I was gutted not to go that year but just couldn't make it. I'm 90% certain I won't be going this year. Got camping and Tunnel booked but that was done by somebody else in our group. Just a bit bored of it. Hopefully a self imposed year off will fire my enthusiasm.

Well this will be my 30th main lemans and 6th classic, plus a test day, yes it is hassle sometimes, yes it can be expensive, yes there are times when i am there when i think why am i here (then i get up and stagger drunkenly back to the tent), but i would not miss it and as soon as i get home i start counting the days until the next trip, so many friends i only meet at Le mans so to me the race is only a part of the experience a week well spent, what else am i going to do with my time that is even half of the fun

A change is as good as a rest and it sounds like you need a year off.

I've been going since 2009; skipped 2014 due to birth of second child (lucky escape on mid-June!) and as someone else said, I stayed closer to the racing following at home than I ever have managed attending.

2015 was great after a year off and I'm really looking forward to 2016. Not least as I'm taking my newly acquired 996 rather than the 5 series estate load lugger!

Also prefer the years when Euro or World Cup are on - adds to it for me.

Why not try the classic and see a different thing from a different angle?

Camp at one of the Chateau sites. Less intense and to me still has a huge amount of charisma. Less stagg do and more culture. You might just like it.

I know someone who was a regular then one year couldn't afford it and other mates were in the same boat so they camped in his garden from Saturday morning through to late Sunday night with Eurosport on the telly. Did BBQ's etc and had a ball.

Hi rwl, I know what you mean, I too do not like the newer Grandstand and now Corporate Village and other associated buildings, they call it improvements but I am not sure who they are improving things for (mainly the sponsors methinks) I miss all the trees that used to be around the Village. I started a similar thread a couple of years back.

In the end I did go due to pressure from friends and it was fun. This year I'm doing something I have not done before, getting there on the Tuesday and having a change of campsite too smile I plan to take a trip to Arnage Corner too to see the latest "progress" on the spectator area too smile 1982 was my first year and Oh boy has the place changed!

Best of luck what ever you decide smile

I go as much for the opportunity of time away with my friends as I do the racing and atmosphere. Our group had a couple of years off while people got married and bought houses, which made our recent return all the more sweet.

Perhaps a year away will remind you why you went in the first place. It will certainly be better than those who go and then take to the internet to moan about spectators/organisers/development year in and out.

Did quite a few consecutive years in the early noughties, had a long break until 2011 and enjoyed it to reminisce but didn't pull me back in the way it did previously. Far more commercial and spirit seemed a bit less and more segregated. I still think its a great weekend and would go back but its not a "must do" on the calendar in the way it was to me previously.

Somethings I like great memories of and to park them there. 2011 was a reminder that I might dislodge some of those memories so perhaps left as they are smile

First time in 20 years I've decided to give it a miss. I've always enjoyed it but I'll watch it on Eurosport this year and see how I feel. May well be back next year.

The 24hr is always a certainty on the lads calendar. No matter what, it's a few days to escape the rat run, catch up with mates, drink some ales, enjoy the Corvettes and have a blast in the go karts.
