Just a quick courtesy thank you to everyone who took the time to contribute to my post, particularly chrisgadd and phillpot... My S2 now has fully operational brakes and a valid MOT to keep the authorities happy.... All we need now is a prolonged spell of summer...enjoy your motoring. Cheers

Ended up changing the whole near side hub and flange assembly. Mechanic maintains it was the flange probably 'bent' previously when someone replaced a wheel bearing!
