The problem with Garv
Discussion
The problem is he runs lovely for miles and
then for no reason will cut out, sometimes when
going fast and sometimes going slow, it happened
again Sunday and I stopped and it seems to be missing
but still running, then will be ok again, have cleaned the pump connections
and got a new coil coming, any ideas please

You can get a very useful insight into what's going on just by connecting a test lamp from pump positive to ground and another between coil +ve and ground, and put these somewhere you can see while you're driving. If these confirm that you have an electrical problem then you can add further diagnostics to narrow it down. There are so many potential causes for this type of problem that it's almost a waste of time trying to guess, but you don't need anything fancy to track it down methodically.
My issues in the V8 prior to EuroTour was fuel pump, despite being only a few weeks old. I changed all ignition parts and ended up at RT Racing as I'd not improved things. No pre-filter and loads of crap in the pump.
Pre-filter now fitted along a new quality fuel pump (Bosch).
Rovergauge confirmed all sensors working correctly too.
Jobs a goodun

That's shame Barry. Did you manage a permanent solution to the damp start problem at Burghley? Presumably so if it went OK in Belgium? Mind you it would be surprising if damp didnt get in somewhere, at one point on a flooded bit an oncoming truck sent a bow wave clean up to the screen of the S. I am amazed it didnt cut out.
I can think of one problem with Garv, you keep referring to it as a he, now if you just treated it as a she......;)

Fitted new coil and diode thing ( thanks
Mike I'm still saving up ) still the same
so had to fit the new petrol pump and bingo
seems good now only done about 15 miles in
a thunder storm so far, more testing tomorrow.
Barry, has the problem stayed fixed? I've had similar symptoms this week, either wouldn't start or once running stopped suddenly and then would restart after a few attempts. Traced the problem to the ignition switch tonight. The black plastic bit that carries the terminals was loose in the diecast switch body and as as you wiggled it the pump cut in and out. I have now re staked it and it seems ok but i may see if I can get a new one. Mike I'm still saving up ) still the same

Hi Rob,
Garv ran faultlessly all the way down to Le Mans for the Classic, did the parade laps with no probs and was fault-free all the way back until we got on the M25 just past the Dartford Tunnel, when he suddenly faltered and died. But then he restarted and carried on to make it home in a torrential downpour.
I'll tell Barry to check his ign switch, thanks for the heads up.
