Id riding with the roof off today on pretty bad B roads and was aware of what I consider pretty bad scuttle shake.. frown

Made me not want to drive with roof off . So is this common.. Do I have a problem.? And what if anything can be done.?

I could probably live with a full cage if that cures it. The mx5 boys seem to use chassis braces so can anything be done underneath...? I suspect v8s are better due to the additional bracing and I guess you could replicate that with a body lift..

Hmm so anyways your thoughts appreciated.. S3 15" wheels gaz front Nitrons back polybushes..60 profile tyres.

Can I assume 17" wheels would make this worse.?

Perhaps I should choose better roads.

Are your outriggers sound? I haven't noticed scuttle shake in the S2 or V8S but if the outriggers were failing that could leave the tub substantially unsupported which might result in scuttle shake.

I suggest you check out what has caused it rather than going to a plaster to deal with the symptoms...I'm sure that they don't normally have that issue. My standard S3 on standard wheels and tyres hasn't shown any issue in 10 years of ownership (to the best of my fairly limited knowledge)

Do you find that having the roof up makes a significant difference? I must admit that I tend to have the roof up when driving fast, and that the roads I drive on are usually pretty good. It may be that I simply haven't noticed the problem. My V8S ought to be worse than most because it's got pretty firm springs (600/500) and solid damper mounts.

One thing to check is stones sitting on the top of the outriggers. I used to get all kinds of creaks and groans until I pressed a blade up the gap between the outriggers and the body and got rid of all the crap - made a huge difference..

Thanks for the replays folks.. Yes only a problem with roof down... Then not really a problem but annoying.. I don't believe there is anything going on except a little chassis flex.. Scuttle shake is common on cars like ours and TVR are not renowned for the rigid chassis design. Later fixed roof TVRs have a full cage built in to reduce flex etc.
