My S2 currently has the ignition timing set at 12 degrees BTDC, this set up seems to be fine and is well documented. In the S bible on page 84 it quotes, 8 BTDC as standard or retard to 4 BTDC on U/L, surely this can`t be correct, or is it ? It also mentions that running on U/L fuel and the lower octane, adjust the timing from the normal 12 to 9. That`s four different settings rolleyes, so which is correct ? Confused.com hehe

I checked in 3 Haynes manuals and they all have 12° BTDC for non-cat engines, although one of them says that this is for 97 octane fuel.

I believe the 8° on page 84 refers to a 2,9 engine running leaded fuel, so this is not correct. If one of the EEC terminals is connected to ground (in one of the Haynes manuals, it says terminal 23), the timing can be retarded by 4°, which can be done if leaded fuel is being used.
It also mentions that the 12° to 9° adjustment is not required for super unleaded, so probably you can forget about this.
