Can anybody point me in the right direction of where to buy some good quality chassis paint for a 1992 v8s, it has to be red. I want to get everything ready for a few winter jobs while it is inside in the garage.

I was very pleased with POR15 black chassis paint, but it doesn't seem to be available in many colours and I don't know if it's available in red. POR do also sell a two part chassis paint that is available in many colours (including red, I'm sure) but I've never used that.

Just did the front half of my chim with this, amazing stuff. The small pack did 2 coats on the engine bay and wishbones....

They do a red, but will also make colours for you if you buy enough. Be aware that it is 2 pack though, so you have to be commited when you use mix it. Can't pour excess back in the tin and can't re use the paint brushes.

The quality of the finish is worth it in my opinion though.

Both those are fime for a V6 S but won't work on a V8S.

I suspect there are some tormenting types on here tonight! wink As well as an echo! biggrin

How about Rustoleum? Tim's blue chassis looked good in that, I imagine they do a red as well?

Rust oleum seems to be good and they do it in red. Can you just paint it on over the existing paint or do you have to completely strip it back to bare metal and then primer and then finally rust oleum?

How about lime green? Seems to be the "on trend" colour at the moment laugh

also eco friendly biggrin

..but on a serious note, depending whether you like a textured finish or not 'U-POL Raptor' which is very very hard to chip, crack & damage, completely repels water, they even use it on tanks & various offroad & agricultural vehicles

OP,

On a serious note, do you want a spray or brush applied product?

The original powdercoat can look ok, but hide a multitude of sins underneath it.
I would recommend getting back to the bare metal wherever possible.

Having done mine over the last year or so biggrin - the process went something like this...

- Tried stripping the old powder coat/waxoil/rust off by hand nono - idea gave up & got it shot/sand blasted locally...thumbup
- Discovered more holes than I thought rolleyes so sent it away for welding...
- 2 coats of POR15 Grey - takes about 3.5 hours each coat to apply by brush (kills brushes & skin by the way yikes)...left about 2 weeks to a month between coats (as was painting outside on the drive so weather dependant).
- Then 3 coats of Hammerite Red - about 3.5 hours per coat with anywhere between two weeks & 6 months between coats (again weather time dependant)...cool

The hammerite will chip, however, the POR15 underneath does not...hammerite is cheap & easy to touch up...thumbup

It's taken time, but well worth it now...beerdrivingwoohoo

Cheers

I would also suggest that you follow Jaye's advice. That is also how I did my chassis. I used 2 coats of a 2 component epoxy as an underlayer and two coats of Rustoleum on top.
I will however mention that it took me 10 hours to cover with one coat, using a brush.

I should have also asked, is this a body off resto or tidying up with the body on?

Personally, body off - blast and epoxy coating.

Body on - thorough clean up with wire brushes / attachments treat and Hammerite or similar brush on paint. This will need chechcking and touching up.

It will be a body on tidy up, the chassis is in very good condition, I just want to give it a good going over to make sure it lasts. Paint application by brush.

You can't get to all the areas that need attention if the body is still on. Some, but not all.

^^^^THIS!

Mine looked great from underneath too but with body off could see the true extent of the rust corrosion, as the chaps said 'do it right, do it once'
