Mine looked great from underneath too but with body off could see the true extent of the rust corrosion, as the chaps said 'do it right, do it once'
As a wise man put it: by now all S series can be divided into two groups: those that have had a body off chassis repair/replacement, and those that need it.

There is a subsection of the second group, which is reserved for the following:

  • "The chassis is solid" - Translates to I hope the chassis is solid, but I haven't actually looked.
  • "New outriggers fitted last year" - With a hammer.
  • "It's been Waxoyled from new, it's fine" - I don't want to poke the Waxoyl incase it's structurally part of the chassis.
  • "It's had the outriggers done" - Someone has tried hacking off the rusted outriggers, and then had a mate weld in some bits of tube (only around the areas he could get to while laying on his back on your driveway.
  • "It has some surface rust, but nothing major - Unless you poke it
  • "Car is in mint condition" - The bodywork is very shiney, the leather is very soft and the metal that everything is bolted on to is completely fked.
