dumb lazy brakes question
Discussion
Can't speak for the specific 260mm upgrade you mention, but 'big brake' upgrades routinely keep the original calipers. For example the first brake upgrade on mine took the fronts from 240 to 285mm keeping the original calipers. An upgrade that uses bigger calipers too is likely to work better by letting you use bigger pads.

Steve, you need the whole "kit", disc (that ones obvious), caliper, carrier and pads.
Check out part numbers for pads on Chimaera with 240 & 260, they're different
Now then, do I know anyone with a set for sale?

I believe both might be possible options, you'd have to sift through the ford parts bin to find something that uses those calipers on a 260mm disc to get the bracket though and then find a disc with the right height to fit it (possibly 2wd sierra with ABS actually).
I used the brackets and calipers from a griff (sierra xr4/escort somethingorother, these are not the same as the standard sierra ones on an S) and discs from a 2wd sierra with ABS (griff uses the other offset discs which will not fit)

I'll ask him tomorrow, see if he has any photo's
Photo's.............Front pair of calipers are "available", I don't know for sure but from the condition of them I would think they are really quite new or professionally refurbished?
Disc's are very good condition, painted silver to keep surface rust at bay. This will easily sand off or even just burn off when used.
The taller disc's have been used on my S so I presume the other pair (that come with the calipers) would require some 3mm spacers (thick washers)between caliper and caliper/hub carrier and possibly longer bolts?
Pads look "good as new", can't make out a brand but this little set up was bought from a guy who didn't look like the sort to scrimp so I'd be confident they are good quality.

for those of you that have swapped from 240 to 260mm discs:
is it simply the calliper mounting bracket and disc that changed or is a new calliper required?
Generally original fit brakes are ford sourced. The 260mm version will be a replacement caliper, pad carrier and obviously the disc with corresponding larger surface area pads also. Original ford spec discs also go to 278mm and 300mm with single piston slide calipers. All have different pad carriers and calipers to suit. As mentioned on other posts the disc offset needs to be checked from model to model as same size disc but different offsets just like wheels. is it simply the calliper mounting bracket and disc that changed or is a new calliper required?
Are you just curious how to upgrade or do you want to fit larger front diameter disc brakes?

I've already done the 283 machines to 278 conversion on TGTVR, but I'm intrigued by the option to go 260 using existing caliper on V8S. Just wondered if a mounting bracket alone plus disc could make it possible: minimum effort style....
Well for arguments sake. You fit a 260mm disc. It's radius is 10mm bigger so the original caliper and carrier needs to move 10mm further out and yes a suitable bracket would need to be made but the original mounting holes would need to be staggered and stepped so the caliper would be either higher or lower from its original bolt position on the axle hub mount and retain the correct offset. Personally I don't think any brackets are readily available unless you have one offs made. Top Gear TVR said:

I not really sure this would be worth the effort. Why go to the trouble of fitting a larger disc and then use a pad designed for a 240 disc? I think THIS is the pad for the 240mm disc whereas THIS is the pad for the 260mm disc. As you can see from the data sheets, the pad for the 260mm disc is 6mm higher than the one for the smaller disc.
You'll see though that the width of the pad is the same for both fitments so I suppose it's possible the 260mm pad will fit the 240mm caliper. But I've got a feeling the piston in the XR4i caliper is bigger and so the spring clip on the back of the smaller pad might not engage properly in it.
IMHO I'd say keep it simple and fit the 260mm disc with the larger caliper and pads it was designed for. Thar way you can do the whole job in a couple of hours maximum.

I was thinking that if it's just a carrier and disc swap then no hydraulics to play with.
Correct. The whole lot just bolts straight on and you reconnect the existing hoses. It really is that simple, honest guv. greymrj said:
....Frustratingly Joe, that link doesnt cover the 260mm options, which is a shame.
By the time I'd done that lot I'd pretty much lost the will to live Next time I've nothing better to do and get bored I can add a line for the 260mm "upgrade". But it really is a simple matter of buy the XR4i calipers, pads and discs and bolting them on. Like this....
Gold isn't compulsory! With the benefit of hind-sight I'd suggest replacing the old rubber hoses with braided stainless to get the best out of this mod.
