That's the steering rack, the big bit with bellows on it, the anti-roll bar looks a bit like this...........

The steering rack is based on a Vauxhall Chevette unit but modified for/by TVR, anti-roll bar is, I believe, unique to the S.

Presumably, what you want to know is "what car do those parts originally come from"?

As far as I know, the anti-roll bar is TVR only - but I'm not certain.

The steering rack is a bit of a mish-mash - it's basically a Vauxhall Chevette rack with a Ford (escort?) input shaft, and a different Ford (cortina?) steering arms. You can get the one you have refurbished either through a TVR specialist, or directly, which is likely to be cheaper.

Ive fitted a mk 2 escort rack to my S, the details below.

Hi All. I have spent several months trying to deal with the steering rack issue on a S1. The centre tube of my rack had corroded to such a point that reconditioning was not an option, so this is how I fixed it :-
I'll start with a shopping list.

Escort MK 1 or 2 rack. I used 2.4 turn fast rack from Godspeed. http://www.godspeedmotorsport.co.uk. if you can get one without the tie rods so much the better.
2 tie rods FEBI 08768.these are for a mk7 escort (293mm long). note! Lemforder equivalent is 30mm to long.
ALLOY RACK CLAMPS Escort MK1 & MK2 (RD848) rallydesign.co.uk
2 x Track rod end Febi 11988 Tie Rod End
1 pair of Chevette rack boots.

Need making
2 x rack extensions

1 x rack packer. 24 x 29 x 7.5 nylon block.

the packer goes behind this clamp.
You also need to pull the triangular shaft further through, but there is plenty of spare up there.

That's it really. The extensions put the inner joints in the correct place so that the ackerman angles remain the same.the inner end can be staked, but i just used locktite and 2 27mm spanners to tighten the extensions. the Tie rods are not staked.

Hi.
If you are looking for a service / repair or just to have it checked over then I would suggest you have talk with Rodger at Kiley Clinton
http://www.steering-racks.co.uk/made-in-britain/
They can also make you a custom unit if you want.

I had terrible problems trying to set up my steering / tracking ? steering wheel alignment - 'til I found that one track rod was 50mm shorter than the other confusedmadfurious Confused the hell out of me. The shorter one had more thread length too?? don't know who did this or why.

ended up purchasing a rod extender for one side (made the rod a little too long so had to shorten it slightly as the track rod end bottomed out before the tracking set correctly.

I'm interested in your Escort Rack solution cool as my rack could do with a refurb as it is a little stiff and does not self centre properly.

Hi Mick.
If you use the Escort rack you will have to add a bit to the steering joint as the output shaft from the steering rack is shorter by about 50mm.
I just used a joint from Car builders.

Is the Escort steering rack the correct length - the inner end of the rod pivot point? then just needs the extenders to make up the extra track width to the hub end?
Or does the rack need extending to put the pivot points in the correct location?

I have been chatting to Richard at Riley, he would do a refurb in the same day. As I'm over in England soon.
Has anyone changed the turns ratio to make car more responsive?

You need to bear in mind that fitting a faster rack will also make the steering heavier, since there is no power assistance.

I find mine quite responsive enough as it is for road use, and as said, parking/low speed maneuvering would be interesting!

There's 3 different diameters of anti roll bar, 22 24 and 26mm I think. I do know V8S is 22mm.

My post above covers most of your points. You probably had a Lemforder rod one one side and a febi on the other, they are different lengths even though they are for the same car...The lemforder is to long.
The extension pieces fit between the rack and the track rod, this is similar to the mod TVR did to the Chevette rack and they put the joints at the same centres so preserving the steering geometry.
The standard Escort rack is 2.9 turns lock to lock which is the same as the Chevette, but I've used 2.4 as I have power steering. The Chevette gaiters are needed as the escort ones are too short.

I'd imagine any of the big Rally Car/Motorsport suppliers, like RallyDesign would be able to supply?
