Disc brake conversion help
Discussion
can anyone help with the hanbrake cable. Ive fitted rear discs to a drum brake S1 and everything is just hunkydory except for the cable. I have a V8S cable and the inner is around 650mm to long, TVR parts tell me that this cable, which is listed for Chims supercedes the old cable, but it dont fit my car!
Cable is Ford Sierra based but shortened.
Mike modified a Sierra one himself. I think the last one Racetech had has long since sold. One of our Eastern European members has a cable maker near to him and got a one off special made for reasonable cost.
What is the fitting issue? Irregardless of whether you have the right cable or not, connecting them can be hard. I would disconnect it from the lever, set the adjuster to max slack, connect to callipers, connect to lever and then take up the slack.

car looks like this right now, so access is not an issue.

Yes calipers are at the top but as the outer and inner attach to the caliper its orientation is irrelevant, the inner cabble extends 650mm past the caliper on one side when everthing else is in place.
I've looked at a V8 s chassis and all the mountings are in the same location.
Some of the disc brake conversion kits mount the caliper at the 9 o'clock or 3 o'clock positions, which would give you a headache were that the case.I've looked at a V8 s chassis and all the mountings are in the same location.
Having just measured an old V8S cable, I've just rung TVR Parts to let them know the cables they have are indeed too long. The J0101 cable you've been supplied is the same as a Chimaera one, and the S uses a shorter cable than that.
I'm just going to get them some dimensions for the original V8S one I have here and ring them back (as I need one, probably two or three!) Will report back.
Right, I've just furnished TVR Parts with all the dimensions of the V8S cable (so blame me if they don't fit!) Bad news is they're going to be a few weeks away, but they're planning to get a batch made. Whether they will extend that to the drum setup as well, I don't know. They already list a drum cable, but I'm guessing that's just a Sierra one. In any case, these seem to be listed elsewhere at the moment, but I have a source for getting these made as I had a few done last year.
The S cable inner is approx 2600mm long, where as the Chimaera is approx 3400mm long. I've arrived at those numbers by measuring old crusty, kinked cables, but as I see it that is the only difference. The outers are 900mm on the non-adjustable side, and 1400mm on the adjustable side, and as far as I can see, this remains unchanged between S and Chimaera.
Chimaera cable is, as far as I remember, a standard Sierra cable for cars with rear discs. It's the S models that are drastically shorter, and it makes sense, because the Chimaera's cable is routed all the way back to the rear of the lower rear wishbone, and enters the caliper from underneath. The S is on the top at 12 o'clock, and the cable enters from the front. You can't mount calipers onto an S in the orientation they are found on the Chimaera, unless you want to secure the handbrake cable to the driveshaft
I'm not happy cutting cables down and joining them together myself (if it let go on a hill, that's a LOT of liability on my part in exchange for making £20 or whatever) so have tried to give TVR Parts all the info. They were very grateful and hopefully they will get some made up, and at competitive prices.

Access isn't the problem, it's lack of slack in the cable of the set up. The other models have the same problem. Mike eliviated the problem by slitting the hole in the calliper the cable passes through. This was, of course, after I had suggested it I used a Caterham from a de-dion axle, nice fit and just the right length. you could ring them and ask the length. they do 2 but I think the other is for the live axle and is longer

How did you get round the lack of a quadrant, or did you use your old one?Alan

Stupid question maybe, but could you try fitting it the other way around ie put the longer end to the caliper on the other side?
No. Its the overall length thats wrong, or more correctly the 2 outers are ok but the inner is to long. TVR Parts now recognise this but it will take a while to get new ones so I will use Alan Whitakers solution.Being so close you could bring the finished artical to this weekly meet - http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
Hi there , I had exactly the same problem with the handbrake cable when I converted my s3 , TVR car parts supplied a v8s handbrake cable and like yours was miles too long , it was actually a standard Sierra cable , you can either source a secondhand v8s cable as I did or have the Sierra cable shortened by a company like Speedy cables , I made the overall length of the v8s inner cable to be 258cm end to end including the pulling loops at each end .
TVR car parts are pretty annoying that they are still selling these "v8s" cables , I personally called them to tell them but they were totally uninterested.
My calipers are at the 12 o clock position by the way and work perfectly with the original v8s handbrake cable.
Hope this helps

Hi Alan I never liked how the cable ran so I welded up a second bracket. The cable ran between the body and the chassis. In my centre consul I have a storage thingy, Made the bottom removable so I could get to adjust the cable, I uses the old adjuster bracket for the stop end and welded the adjuster between the top rails.
Picture not to clear but I have a better picture if I can find it
I also used the Caterham de dion clevis and pulley Just a bit smaller than the TVR

The weather should be better by the time this is ready. Roof down is one thing, but no body or wheels is something else!!Alan Whitaker said:

the cable run is crap, mine fouls the chassis rail so i was planning to move it. like the idea of an openable hatch in the box.Picture not to clear but I have a better picture if I can find it
