Body off resto 10 years ago, yet a reserve of only £2500? If that chassis was done well, that's a bargain!

If it was done with Hammerite, expect it to need another body-off resto laugh

Speaking as someone who drives A LOT of TVRs, I can tell you a Chimaera is a much, much better car than an S. Pretty much better in every way.

I, however, own an S.

That's it. biggrin

I agree with you sir! When I looked for an S a few years ago, I was shocked by what I found and Rob Ingleby, who looked at a lot of cars for me, eventually advised that I should buy a Chim as the build quality was far superior to the S and the difference in price (then) was minimal!!

So having owned a Chim I can say that if you want a V8 I would advise anyone to have a look and drive a few for comparison.

However, I have now got myself an S3c and I feel the old school style is more my taste, and the cost of resto/repairs will be accepted as a fact of ownership!!

Eyes wide open and be realistic what you can do in a professional manner to fix the beast (or pay someone else) when buying a TVR is the best advise as there are a lot of dogs around!!

And the new TVR is reported to be getting the Coyote engine.

Looking forward to the unleashing of the beast.

There is something about the S though. Chimaeras are common. wink

Luckily Glen the Chimaera prices are rising faster than my finances and I may be forced (biggrinthumbup) to keep the S. Cut a few inches off Debs legs and she will find it easier to get in?

yikes There's no need for that Richard. nono The S1/S2 could comfortably accommodate Peter Wheeler's lanky frame.

scratchchin Mind you, he didn't tend to wear tight skirts.
Tell Debs she should wear hot pants like me. wink

Hi all.
Just to say that I took a punt (got carried away bidding)and bought this S1 .
Its got the twin bonnet pulls and originally had the integral digital clock/heater controls but has been changed at some point to integral analogue clock/heater controls. Car seems pretty solid, but a bit tired and a little tatty here and there. It came with lots of old paperwork/receipts and photos of chassis rebuild.
Expect me to be posting lots of questions about S1's on here pretty soon, such as what's best engine oil to use and other dumb queries.

Ask away, Valvoline VR1 is a popular choice and don't forget you can always search old posts.

try google search "pistonheads S Series engine oil" smile

Welcome to the wonderful world of S enthusiasts! beer
You have certainly come to the right group for advice, I could never have restored mine without the experience and advice generously given by folks on here.
You will find a majority have the later 2.9 engined cars but a number of us purists (like me)have the 2.8 cars. If you have the two bonnet pulls then yours is quite and early car, certainly before May '88 I think. There are a number of differences between early cars as TVR 'developed' them.

Agreed with Phillpot, Valvoline is a favourite for these old engines. Eurocarparts are often the best supplier but it may have to be on click and collect as many branches wont hold it on stock.

I seem to remember the twin pulls were only on the first 20 cars (did I read it in the bible?)

Thanks for the advice, I'll check out the VR1 oil.
The car was first registered in May 1988 and build no is 123.
Will try to check out old threads first to see if I can find answers to my questions to save going over old ground here.

That number would make sense then if it was only first 20 or so S1's that had twin bonnet pulls. I'm also not sure if engine has "unleaded" heads as only markings on exhaust flanges that I can see are EN cast on them, can't see anything stamped on them at all. More investigation needed I think.
