Hi
I was wondering if anyone has a used coilover I could buy. One of mine has a seal leak and has lost some oil. The ones I've got fitted are AVO and appear original. No way can I afford a full new set at over £500!! The car is a 2.8i V6 1988
Thanks

Hello

If it's AVO then it will be aftermarket.. also I cannot ever recommend changing a single unit. I think your best bet would be to get both front or rear reconditioned by AVO or someone who can. Failing that you may have to buy a new pair I'm afraid.. low end GAZ or ask TVR parts for OEM.? Sorry not sure of price though. I may possibly have a pair in the next couple of months depending on how things pan out.

Cheers

In the ideal world, new ones would be great. Due to the condition of the coilovers I
Wrongly assumed they were original. Again if anyone is changing theirs and has a serviceable pair available I would be grateful.

If they are AVO dampers then they offer a rebuild service. They are based in Northampton. I have had my dampers serviced by them. Worth contacting them to find out the cost.

Your best option is as above, ie get your AVO's reconditioned. Failing that, maybe some kind soul will let you have his old OEM Koni units which can also be refurbished and are perfectly adequate for the job (IMHO) especially if you adjust the rebound to maximum resistance.

Ah all good info.
I assumed from comments in line that AVO would conceder my units to old and tatty!

Quite possibly, which is why they will be more than happy to take some money off your to recondition them laugh

Does the adjuster knob still turn?

does the adjustable spring seat still screw up and down?

Send 'em a photo or two, nothing to lose by asking?

Try soaking in a mixture of ATF and white spirit (or parafin) for a couple of weeks, If you're lucky the adjusters might free off.

Well, surely everybody has some Pink Paraffin in their Jerry cans for topping up their Aladdin stove?

Paraffin is almost as expensive as petrol. Explain that one! Or is that just another example of how us southern nancy boys get ripped off?

Joe, have you tried meths? It's slightly more expensive, but tastes sooo much better than paraffin.

Hi All
The adjusters all turn ok. It's just the little grub screws I'm the adjusters that are stuck

Are these grub screws in the ride height adjusting ring (to lock the ring in place)? If so then if soaking in Plus Gas (or ATF & paraffin) doesn't release then then could you drill them out (very carefully!)?

Failing that, if you don't happen to have a gallon of paraffin and a bottle of ATF to hand, cut/break them off (I think the seat adjuster ring is alluminium?) without damaging main body and ask AVO for nice new ones.

Before going to the above extremes, try ( after soaking ) removing the grub screws using an appropriate extractor such as Dormer Eezi-Out or similar.

OP, why do you need to remove the adjuster rings anyway?
If you are getting AVO to refurbish the dampers, I would imagine that they would attend to them anyway... that's if you really need to adjust the heights that have presumably been acceptable for many years...
