This should be a simple question (I hope) but I can’t see any other threads about it on the first few pages …

The parts list recommends a battery for the S-series. The Lucas P/N YUA 069/3.

My battery’s knackered. Won’t take a charge, even from a reconditioner. Before I go ahead and order one of the Lucas batteries, has anyone has success fitting something easier to get hold of, without needing to modify anything to make it fit (or use a strap to hold it in)? Something like a Bosch, for example?

Why not use a strap? Many of us do and it allows you to get a bigger battery in the tray!

No real reason, just wondering if there’s options out there that fit perfectly and don’t need one.

Have a good look at many well sorted and used S cars. The strap option is actually better and more secure than the clamp.

Have you tried usung an old fashioned charger rather than a "reconditioner" ? Modern battery monitor/chargers require some charge in the battery to work.

The "069" is the important part of the Lucas part number, take a look here for a few options and some competitive prices wink

Check dimensions, some may be taller than others and quite possibly won't have the correct "lumps" if you're trying to use the original clamp.

Info on "Alt Parts List" is quite old, even the Lucas may no longer have the correct lumps scratchchin

Also far easier to fit imo - and avoids any risk of accidentally lighting things up if you touch the terminals with the clamp while you're trying to get it all arranged.

Original is something like this, requires a lug both ends of the battery, problem being many batteries, but not all, now seem to have those lugs along the sides not the ends?

Thanks everyone. Sounds like I’m 90% likely to end up needing to use a strap anyway so I might as well buy a beefier, easier to find locally, battery after all.

I also need some ramps to lift the front end up so I can open the bonnet properly! Welcome to S ownership, I guess …

A few owners have made and fitted different hinges allowing the bonnet to open wider without the need to put the front up on ramps wink

Sadly it is very quiet here on PH these days, whether you are a fan or not the facts are the vast majority of chat now goes on on the FaceBook Group

Typical of most car communities, I think. Which is a shame. I avoid Facebook like the plague these days. Much prefer forums.

As for the bonnet hinges … I need to get my car back to full running health before I even think about starting to modify anything. One thing at a time! Battery, radiator, starter motor, manifold … and then an MOT.
