Poor acceleration

I have recently bought a s3 c with misfire I have cured this by replacing the distributor which had a damaged pulse wheel, however on road test found to have poor acceleration, on return to workshop wouldn't start as fuel pump not running got underneath tapped pump then started.This weekend I shall change pump ,filter and fuel pope as suspect fuel starvation am I in the right area of thinking or am I missing something else.
Any thoughts appreciated.

My usual reply to pump issues is run the pump backwards, it won't hurt it an may cure it.


Forgot to add...........then run it the correct way and see if there is any improvement
