Boring topic... sorry...

The bonnet strut is one of the things on the "to do" list when I get the car back from DB at the weekend.

It's looking a little tired and rusty, so needs repainting (any tips?), but the little plastic "holder" for it has snapped long ago and it tends to move around... any ideas where to get a clip from? - or an alternative solution?

Yep fell out, struct bouncing around, so I knotted a rag round it and jammed it at the top when down. I suppose a few -eh-m- years later I should have the correct clip!

Rubbed my bonnet stay down and then gave it a couple of coats of Smooth Black Hammerite - looks fine now.
The retaining clip to me looks like one of the electrical industries self adhesive cable clips, I have a few spare although the ones I have would be better one extra size up. They fit perfectly the plastic windscreen washer pipe if that needs securing.
e-mail mail if you would like a few.
Regarding the Stabilus stay on the other thread, I thought this was for the boot? mines non existant and I sent to Stabilus for details but using the parts list reference the details I got wouldn't fit the boot attachment points - any ideas of what it should be?

Any ideas for securing the damn thing better when upright?

Twice when jump-starting it has the bonnet come crashing down over jump-leads and all, and the bonnet stay has left and unslightly cash inside the engine bay.

Tend to use Gaffa tape nowadays, but was wondering if anyone has come up with some better or permanent?

I use a large reusable zip-tie forming a loop about 4" across, held to the bonnet stay with a smaller zip tie. The larger tie loops around the bonnet pin when the bonnet is open, so it secures the stay to the bonnet.

Tripps - a few suggestions.
Assuming the piece of the stay that goes through the "catch" is long enough you could -
(1)put a small clamp or clamp grips on it.
(2) drill a hole in the end and put a split pin in.
(3) thread the end (with a die) and put a wing nut on.

I was at the Glasgow TVR meet on Sunday and Dave Bruce had a Jag XJS gas strut on his bonet which was excellent - fits right on too!

Got any pictures? I like the sound of the mod - had the bonnet fall on me several times when playing with the carbs, should have used a tiewrap, but didn't have any with me.

I use a clothes peg with much success

The bonnet strut was from the bonnet of an xjs jaguar and bolts directly onto existing bracket on wing and into hole that stay would go into on the bonnet.photo's on http://uk.photos.yahoo.com/bc/cartoman800/lst?.dir=/tvr+bonnet+strut

I used to clamp a small Mole Grip onto the locator on the bonnet once the stay was in place, that way it couldn't come out until I removed the Grips. Never failed

Brilliant! Btw that is a very sparkly engine bay, how do you keep it so clean?

Cheers

Hi everyone,

What is the reference for the jaguar xjs bonnet strut?
I'm fed up with the stty strut on my S2, there is no clip or device to keep the strut in its place. I'm always worried that one day, it pops out and the bonnet goes wide open and crashes.

Many thanks,

Best regards,
Geoffrey

Just for the time being, to protect your bonnet until you can get a better system, just tie a loop of thin shock cord to the stay and loop it round the bonnet catch pin when the bonnet is open. Simple and very effective, at least as a temporary precaution.

fitted gas strut

as can be seen I also fitted a 'wide open' bonnet where I moved the hinge forward and down.

NO NO yikes they are much too strong and will lock your bonnet shut*. Go for tailgate struts off a small hatch-back.
