Drove down to London at the weekend for a wedding and the car seems to have developed a fuel problem. The car accelerates and pulls fine and ticks over with no problem but when de- accelerating, when coming to a roundabout for instance the revs drop down to 500 rpm and occasionally the car stalls. Bit puzzled as the car is behaving fine apart for this and the fuel filter was replaced at the service a week ago.

I've been asking advice on this identical problem for weeks, but to no avail. Look at Idling Glitches from a week or two back for more info. I've changed, cleaned and tweaked every bloody thing to do with the fuel system! Please let me know if you have any more joy Ian.(by the way mine's an S1 so may not apply to yours.

One thing to check is the rubber pipe that goes from the top of one of the rocker cover to the silver plenum. Rev the engine (no need to go mad) and watch the pipe when you release the throttle. Mine collapsed under the created vacuum at the point it goes past the distributor where the pipe kinked and the engine stuttered and sometimes stalled. When this happened the engine effectively flooded and the spark plugs appeared wet with petrol when inspected after a stall. Replacing this pipe with a new one and installing it so it does not route around and sharp corners and cleaning the plugs solved my problem and it never came back. The hose is can be purchased from ford and it's the oil breather pipe from the granada - look at the pipe and the numbers will be written on it somewhere. The pipe cost about 3-4 quid. The advice I got was not to use petrol pipe as the oil vapour would degrade the pipe in some way and it would probably collapse under vacuum anyway.

Hope this helps you sort your problem out.

Mark

Edited to add: my car is a 2.9efi s3.

Good thinking Batman!
Brilliant, as it's the only thing left that I can replace!

Cleaned the stepper motor but to no avail, I’ll try looking at the rubber pipe next to see if that's collapsing......after cleaning the stepper motor i took the car for a spin to see if it cured it but snapped the throttle cable 5 miles up the road..Doh!..Replaced the cable but the accelerate pedal is now sitting a lot high than the brake pedal, didn't have time to check but is this adjusted by the screw thread on the accelerator cable by the throttle housing thing? Sorry but can't check at the moment as not home and i only have a couple of hours to adjust it when i get back Friday as I have a ride drive session this weekend.
