Hi Spivvy, if you do a search for 'sender unit' a shed load of old forums will appear, one of which will be my 'sealing the sender' topic which reveals tips on how to stop it leaking fuel once it's all back together. Hope it doesn't teach you to suck eggs. By the way, 11 months on and still no leak from my sender unit....hylomar IS petrol resistant then

Some early S series cars that I have seen had a clamping ring that was fixed by a series of small nuts & washers around the perifery.
Later series (like my old 1991 S3) had a locking ring that simply rotates in the outer part (fixed to the tank). To obtain a good seal it is advisable to order both a new gasket and a new locking ring. I ordered mine from TMS and they cost only a few pounds inc. postage.
