Reading through my handy driving guide it says that a spare set of compulsory for travelling to France.

Does anyone know if one of those Halfords spare sets would do the trick? Is it simply a matter of buying something for an old Escort?

Basically, yes. Rear lights are Escort and headlights are H4's IIRC. Halfords should have something.

Hmm, Halfords eh....

Popped in today, now assuming the Escort pre-1990, then I think either sets 2 or 4 were the ones otherwise the post-1990 model was set 11. They all differed on the internal / number plate lights etc.

I went for set 4, assuming late 80's because the S was designed then, but until I try them...

Also picked up two H4 extra brights, as my headlights are about as useful as the way I glow after readybrek!

Methinks we ought to get a guide together, but to check all the bulbs in the kit is a pig of a job, but I reckon I might fit the extra brights one hung-over morning at Le Mans

Just had a look at the owners manual, and the only details there were the wattages of the bulbs, so we're probably looking at trial and error...

Surely you dont have to have spare internal lights I had some spare brake and indicator bulbs already so I just went to halfords and bought a spare H4 and that little bulb under headlight. Should be enough surely.

You have to have a first aid kit, warning triangle and a fire extinguisher, plus the GB sticker on the back (smear car with vaseline before sticking it on, then you'll have no probs getting it off). I think I have a spare extinguisher if you want to borrow it - will check tonight and ring Simon, then he can swing by and pick it up on his way down if you want it.

My brother spends about 3 months in France every summer and says I should also have about £100 in euros to pay the on-the-spot fines!!

I'll be at both, all being well. At the moment, we're taking the Griff, but we did a dry run packing the tent and everything in to both the Griff and the V8S yesterday, and we can get it all in to either (there's just a bit more room in the Griff though). Going down to LM Thursday morning, coming back Monday. I've got 2 extinguishers though - one of my own (witnessed a very nasty fatal on the M62 a few years ago) and one came with the company lease car.

I'd forgotten what a stickler you are for speed limits, must admit we had a discussion which went something like 'whatever we don't spend on petrol, we can spend on beer...' you can imagine the rest. If anyone sees a red Griff doing 57mph, that'll be us!!!

will be cool to catch up and see either the new V8S or the Griff! havent seen either yet! in a couple of months you have gone from owning a Chim to owning a 5 ltr griff and a V8S!

if its ok with you I will tell Simon to contact you and arrange pick up of the fire extinguisher. Many thanks corinne.

Just thought I`d point out since nobody mentioned it, you need an E111 form from the post office too. It lets you use the French NHS in case you need it!!

Also re GB on the number plate - if you have a GB on the REAR number plate this is ok. If its just the front then no it isnt!!

Oh yes, forgot to mention that. Also, when you've got it stamped at the Post Office, take half a dozen photocopies of it, because in France, they don't just look at it, they take the form off you.

Reckon it's worth doing, as the rule of the Great God Gaffa goes, if you ain't got it, you're gonna need it.

I wouldn't have, but a chap I know went over to play on the old and new Nurburgring last year in his Tuscan Red Rose, with three days AA cover to ensure he'd be OK while on track.

Then on the way back when he was without cover........ £800 just to get the car back.
