Damn unt Blast.

My S3 has gained a knocking sound. I'm thinking it's either the back left CV or the wheel bearing. I only get the knocking at high torque (ie: pulling away) - tho I think it's getting more persistent. Weirdly, it doesn't generally do it cold - I think the joint has to warm up.

Anyway - I've had a look in the parts list and I can't see it - does anyone know, are the CV's and wheel bearings (as part of the transmission) standard Ford parts ?

Thanks,

WG

Sounds like a CV - will probably happen more and more often. Relatively cheap and easy to replace.

Pretty sure they are standard Ford items (Sierra/Granada).

Let us know how you get on with replacing them.

I thought a CV was for a job

seriously
i appear to be suffering from the same affliction
do you have to dismantle the whole rear wheel assembly or can it be done in situ without taking the drum off ? secondly is it 2 cv joints per side or one ?

In situ, yes
2 per side, yes
XR4x4i
Dont forget to replace the rubber bellows.
Not expensive, and fairly quick job (if the torx bolts arent too seized)

Jeepers That could have been nasty. Has the wobbly wheel done any damage to the hub?

Roy.

Just to fill in the end of the tale. The S went in to G&M Autos (TVR specialist) in Chiswick on tuesday. The passenger side driveshaft was taken out and both CVs replaced - very nice Mr Man there was a little nervous we might replace the wrong side as the knocking had of course stopped. So far fingers crossed it hasn't started again. Total cost was 3 hours labour plus parts (standard Ford bits) and VAT which came to about £340 - which I didn't think was too bad - particularly as he safety checked the car ready for driving in france.

Shame it wasn't the wheel nuts though ...

Hmmm - you're telling me I need to buy a torque wrench aren't you ? I notice there are lots on ebay - is there any particular design or make that you chaps would recommend ?

Thanks,

WG
