My hunt for a bargain S1
Discussion
For that money, you can get an S2 with the later 2.9 engine, better suspension (As one lady S3 owner said, in my old S1 I had to hold my boobs as they hurt so much over bumps), probably with elec windows.
If it's an S1 you want, assume you have already looked at PH adverts, and joined TVRCC, as they have several for sale each month?
S1s start under £5k, mileage not a problem, but condition is - I would get one with regularly waxoyled chassis - rotten chassis could end up costing you more than the car to repair!

I printed off the membership application and filled it out by hand last week. The 'Join Online' link does not seem to work....
There seemed to be some nice cas on the Autotrader website, before I finally found my S1 in the PH ads - I picked up a beauty for £5500...

5800 is on the high side for an S1, but I did see a minter for 6500 a while ago, (don't know if it sold at that or not).
One thing worth thinking about is that S3s were longer in the door and wider in the footwell than the earlier models. If you are on the taller side of average you might find an S1 a bit tight. Personally have no problem being 5 foot 8, but maybe worth a thought..

The prices in autotrader are very high. I recently sold my s3 with 85k miles on it for 6550. I had it advertised at 6900 in the trader which was significantly lower than anything else in that week with an aim to getting about 6500 and didn't get that many enquiries so haggle. I didn't get too much interest from advertising on PH either.
The guy who bought it was extremely pleased as it was a nice car.

Crossle did the TVR you pick up have mileage of around 19k and was it an S2/3? I saw one on Autotrader going for 5.5K, what a bargain!
No, mine had 66k, all documented, from a regular PH'er called "Tav". He'd owned it for 6 years and done all the horrible jobs, so now I'm reaping the benefits....
Its a 'proper' S1, but was factory fitted with very nice OZ split-rims, similar to the V8's - I guess Halfords had run out of those awful Wolfrace rims that day? See the pic on my profile!

where did you sell it in the end then Mark?
shnozz said:I had two people lined up to see it, the saturday guy had seen it in autotrader and the sunday guy had seen it on PH (I think). The saturday guy had seen something like 15 'S's apparently and decided to buy it on the spot and we came to an agreement on price that was slightly over what I'd decided I wanted for the car and that price easily covered the 'new' Westfield.

I tried looking on your profile, but ended up logging in, and seeing my own photos - go figure?
Whereabouts in Herts are you? I'm in Bishop's Stortford, and haven't seen a single 'S' yet (Chimeras, Tamoras, mainly Tuscans, but no Ss) - meet up for a ?
I'm in exotic Hemel Hempstead - my neighbour has a Tuscan plastered with PH stickers, rather lowers the tone....
Ah yes, the land of the Magic Roundabout!
Do you go to the Herts TVRCC meets up your way?
I have tried the Herts/Essex meets, but hardly anyone bothers - unless you're guaranteed sunburn weather, they keep their precious beasts locked up in nuclear bunkers for fear of the tiniest hint of moisture!
Rant over, I'll get me coat!

Bargains r out there. I've just bought an 34k miles S1 for £5200 in A1 condition. Never been in rain and has fully documented TVR history and all old MOTs (also included years tax).
PS. Also managed to get classic insurance for <£200.
Sounds like you found a good deal! Where are the pictures?
