Well, things are getting under way concerning the respray. Had the bonnet and boot lid done today (Sun).


Now if you have not seen this done by a pro its an education by any standards. Apparently its one of the largest bonnets on a modern day car to do as its in the vain of an E type. Two pack primer, 3coats, a rub down with 500 wet and dry, then three coats of colour (Pacific blue) which is a bit pearly and then three coats of two pack gloss. what a finish!
Now its not finished yet as its going to be rubbed with 2000 wet and dry to remove all the Floaters on top of the lacquer and then polish with special rubbing compound, and then polish with wax.

This took all day to get it as spot on as possible. Needless to say he had to do some work on the bits I'd done to get them perfect. I'm well and truely knackered and soon of to bed to recover. Two more weeks now to rub down all the rest of the car and then another whole day at it! (I hope)

Its now a beautiful Jag bright pearly blue, wonderful !

I've done all the work on the body. ground out all the cracks, filled them with fibre glass. then used a good quality filler and then stopper. you don't use that much filler and stopper so a couple of cans of each will do all the car. one bi can of fibre glass should be enough £14. now you do need a good orbital sander which is going to cost you about £150 ish.

A pro will use a lot more as they don,t like rubbing down, so will put loads of filler on but get it right most of the time, fist time. then use the stopper to fill all the pin holes and mistakes. I found that as a new boy to this I had a lot of pin holes that I did not see but the pro found when he put the two pack primer on. Now, this two pack primer is wonderful stuff as it fills and covers. You can put on as much as you want (we put three coats) and touch the pins holes with your fingers so it builds as you take your finger off. You then rub the whole thing down with 500 with a machine on all the easy areas and by hand on all the difficult bits.

Cost has yet to be completed but the primer, colour and lacquar come to about £300. That is the trade price and bear in mind this is a small volume paint shop which gives the advantage of useing two pack products and an older technical style paint which is cheap to buy compared to modern paint. The two pack primer can be as little as £25 a litre and the colour about £21 a litre and about £40 for 5 litres of lacquar plus the hardener (trade)

Compare this to a modern water based (aqua) the colour would be nearly £100 a litre! the total for all the paint could be nearly £1000 which some large paint shops could be forced to use due to the volume of paint used over the year. This is why a respray can cost so much.

The chap doing this for me is a friend so you can't rely on getting a job done this cheap unless you know someone! It took all day to do the bonnet and boot and will be all day for the rest. I will therefore owe him two whole days pay for the work. How much would you pay a skilled man for two full days work?

Interestingly, a good paint sprayer will only get about £10-12 per hour but the firm will charge £20-30 for the customer. in a modern world that is not much for the man doing the work and they nearly all rely on the private work they do at weekends to boost there pay, so see you you can find to do the work privately.

I'll be back to confirm the final price when we finish the job, but it may not help you with a price because I hope he will not charge me to much!
