I was told that you can test by booting it from standing start and if you have 2 even skid marks then you have an LSD if not, then you dont. Dunno how accurate or true this is.

Not sure if you are still with this thread. I've had an S3 for four years and live about 5 miles from David Geralds.
DG's are very good. My car has been totally reliable. I use it as a weekend play thing and love it. Four years ago they cost almost double what they do now and I don't regret it - so I doubt you will.
If you want any help checking them out at DG's or want me to take you for a quick spin in mine, let me know.

Bit late getting into this thread, but a lot of the questions that have been answered are covered in Peter Nixon's Guide to S series on TVR links page www.geocities.com/peter.nixon/. Not been updated for about a year but I found most of it valid when I was looking in July.
Again, for what its worth there's an S3C road test on www.realdriver.com/road tests/tvr s3c.
Had my 1990 S3 for almost two months - use it daily, done about 1,700 miles with only problem to date being clutch master cylinder which packed up (new one ex stock from D Gerald).
Only other thing I've learned to watch out for is the the ease with which you can lock your keys in the boot

Might take you up on that, David Gerards has got a Green S3 on his website at the moment @ £8500 but has indictated he would go down to £7250 so i'm going to take alook this weekend, as he is only 10miles from me, you Studley way?

Its basically a buying guide that gives advice on how to check for LSD if you cant get the info from the chassis number.
It basically says something like turn the wheel not quite hard lock but enough for a 90deg turn (ie out of a T junction). Give it some welly (not too much!) and if only one wheel spins (probably inside) then you have no LSD (obviously). If both spin momentarily before pull away the LSD is fitted.
Obviously give it enough welly to brake traction.
The details are better than that in the doc and mention how to determine what type of LSD is fitted.
The other way is of course to take it out!

)Jack up one rear wheel (handbrake off, car in neutral). Turn the wheel by hand. If you feel light resistance you have an open diff. If you feel a lot of resistance you have an LSD (or you left the handbrake on, left it in gear etc!).
Alternatively if its somebody elses car and they aren't looking, put your foot to the floor in first gear while going round a tight corner and if you leave two black lines you have an LSD, if you leave one black line you have an open diff.
Edited to say: except of course this doesn't work with the S series because as standard they come with a viscous diff not a friction plate diff. D'oh!
