Got a J reg S3, was wondering if it could be a S3C, is there any quick way I can tell? Never had to deal with Cats when I did minis.

Catted cars have different manifolds, usually with a wire coming out of them for the lamda probe.

You cannot miss them ,they are large silver foil covered cannisters set into the exhuast pipes as they curve round the front of the engine. Yours would certainly have had them fitted, although they could have been removed and then replaced with regular pipe.

I think the S3C had a different arrnagement behind the air filter. Ask Podie to take a photo of his and compare it to yours. (oo-er missus )

Other than that, you can try the LSD test i.e. floor it, drop the clutch and spin the wheels, then check whether you have one or two lines of rubber.

So I guess if I have a CAT I have a LSD on it? Is there anyway I can test for the LSD other than the afore mentioned method of revving it and dumping the clutch?

What is the impact of having the LSD on the rear? Never driven a car with and LSD before.

I do have the S2 style bonnet.

Just want to find out if it is a S3C or not.

Podie, a pic would be really helpful. (Am I setting myself up for a nob gag?)

Wildfire, you have an S3C bonnet! (driving/fog lamps) - bonnet didn't change until S4 (see Podie profile - he has an S4 bonnet)

And J reg means diddly squat - mine's a J and still has early S3 interior (leather dash/no leccy mirrors)

If cats are down the front as mentioned, they will be really obvious - if all you can see is pipe and joins - no cat as they stick out like sore thumb.

But you know TVR by now, there are even some S2Cs

Edited to say - Ooh... if its an S3C, there will be warning stickers somewhere warning you to keep your petrol tank away from lead!! (surely even TVR wouldn't forget that one?)

Ah, I read somewhere that the S3s came with bonnets like Podies. That's all. My dad reckons I may have a LSD. Said he thought it felt like it when he drove it.

No, deffo S4, but of course S3C bonnet with lights, does not an S3C make!!

I believe original bonnets no longer available, so replacement ones are going to be with extra light anyway - I'm now hoping for someone to gently reverse into mine so I can get the driving lamps

(You do not want to know the cost of replacing an S bonnet!)

If i remember right i think you can test for a LSD by jacking the back of the car off the ground and turning one wheel. If the opposite wheel turns in the same direction, I think you have a LSD. If it goes in the opposite direction you have a normal diff. Think that’s right, but don't quote me.

This company seem to do brand new V8S bonnets (driving lamps and no air scoop in the drawing) for £750, and I've heard the figure of £1000 bandied around for a full front end respray.

I had a quote from a TVR indie @ £600 for the bonnet respray

An S3c came standard with all the options of an S3. Driving Lights, LSD, Electric mirrors, S/Steel kick plate.
S3 engines have an air flow meter where as an S3c have a MAP and Lamda senors. And the final difference I know is S3c have hydrolic tappet S3's don't.

Mine is an S3C, Shnozz's old car was virtually next out of the factory and is an S3.. The two cars are very different both bonnet wise and interior layout. Mine has fewer cigarette butts

The S3 had an airflow meter just to the left of the nearside wheel, mine just has a pair of (retrofitted) K&Ns and no meter on the end of the plenum. I think thats another way to tell the difference..

Oh, and the S3C decal on the side

mine is an S3C and doesn't have hydraulic tappets - I don't think any of the 2.8 or 2.9 Ford V6 engines had hydraulic tappets throughout the life of the Granada / Scorpio...?

Note that the above post has subsequently been demonstrated to be a pile of slavering pi5h... the 2.9 engine with catalysts DID in fact have hydraulic tappets, as confirmed by TVRMark (Thanks mate) so now I have to reset mine because I adjusted them didn't I?

D'oh!

LSD?

Jack up the rear of the car, one side only and try to spin the wheel (handbrake off of course!!)

If the wheel won't turn or takes a great deal of effort to move just a little (feels like the brakes are binding) you have a slipper!

The LSD was only an option I think, not standard on the S3C, so not a reliable indicator to differentiate.

I'm not sure of this bit though...
