give em a good clean with car shampoo and a coat of wax, best thing is too keep em clean and get those plastic disk things fitted, keeps the brake dust off the wheels.

Buy a set of winter wheels like me! Good way of keeping them clean, found that waxing them fully then applying a coat of some sort of oil to them is good too. WD 40 or such like regularly. Makes them a bit greasy and not too clean but keeps the water out. Also more lacquer is good as well.

Yeah - remember yours looking absolutely wicked - what had been done to them? - I guess they were like it when you bought it.

did you get Chimp wheels in the end?

Not sure, 2shed reckons they have been refurbished or somthing, aside from a load of water marks (didn't dry them orr after washing) they are now tucked up in a dry attic for the winter.

I got hold of a set of S1 5 spoke wheels with Bridgestone S02s on them. They look pretty good, only problem is I have big ground clearance problems now. In my drive. I'm going to wait until the other sidents are out then take a sledge hammer to the offending piece of concrete.

I'll post a picture of the car tomorrow, when I can bring my digital camera in to work.

I was also told that a good thing to do is to cover the wheels in Clear Waxoyl, then power wash them off in Summer. Looks Horrible though.

Where are you getting the refurb Tim?

Had mine refurbed (see profile) and was advised to use water and car polish (I use autoglym)... and NEVER use any alloy wheel cleaner.

Yep they bolted straight on eaisly. But as the tyres were 205/55 rather than 205/60 there are ground clearance problems.

I spent all day yesterday cleaning one wheel... first remove the lacquer, then polishpolishpolish like mad, then wax them... I don't intend to use the car a lot over the winter, it was more of a "will i get a full refurb done?" but these results will do...

No doubt another dumb newbie question, but.....

How exactly? tools 'n' elbow grease? solvents? telekinesis?

When I did this on my mini I found that Nitromorse was good, but I was also taking off black paint, then lots of polishing as stated above.

The alternative approach is to get them powder coated, then they need minimal TLC, just a normal wash with the rest of the car...

Mind you, I have to admit that the diamond cut finish still takes the number one spot in terms of appearance.

I used a small (1/2 inch) brush to put a small area of nitromors on, then wash it off as soon as the lacquer lifts... then the next bit, a tiny bit at a time, careful not to get any on the black bits.

Then some very fine steel wool to take any corrosion off. Then metal polish to buff the surface... then wax as a protectant.

I'm going to see what they are like over the winter, I might take the powder coating option in the spring if cleaning becomes a pain. I prefer them shiny though!

I did re lacquer the wheels after polishing, just to add a bit more protection, but you do lose a bit of the shineyness. Took me 2 days to do all four for the mini, so decided that it wasn't worth it for the Tiv, just got a cheap set of wheels.

Sorry but to open a can of worms, I got to say I think I love the mini more!

:runsforcover:

No what I actually meant to say was, it was: as the wheels were in such good condition, I decided to to spoil them by stripping them or running them through the winter. Besides look at it this way. Instead of refurbishing the wheels myself to save money each year, I spent money on the Tiv and bought more wheels for it. Aside from the fact that refurbishing costs about £50 per wheels and new rims for the mini are £40 each.

Let me know when it's safe to come out.
