S Series Petrol Filler Caps !!!!!!

I have a provisional price for a complete Filler Cap (all companants) in 316 Stainless Steel expected price is £100 assuming there are sufficient takers between ourselves and the Scimitar guys.
Price is high because of the tooling costs.
So please indicate if you are interested at £100 we will still need to ensure quality is high. The end result will be First class

I'm quite surprised at how cheap it is for a complete stainless item. It just goes to show the economics of manufacturing in China/India or wherever it was. Also brings into sad perspective why so many engineering companies are closing down in this country.
Anyway, I will certainly purchase one of these caps, assuming production goes ahead and the quality/function is acceptable.
Thanks for such a good initiative.

Hi Lads,
Very sory for the delayed update on the fuel caps but hopefully this will answer your questions.
We have found a suitable manufacturer in China for the cap, the tooling costs are quite high due to the number of compontnts and the manufacturing process, the financial side has been agreed in principle but of course it is a numbers game (the more caps the cheaper).
I will advise more on price when we are nearer to manufacture but I want the price to come down.
The initial quote was for an exact copy of the original cap (Mazak) not 316 Stainless...
Everyone on this site and the Scimitar guys are all for the cap but the quality is paramount (and I agree) My dilemma and it is stopping this moving forward is this, You pay the tooling up front, you sign off the sample cap for quality & function and then were in business, However how do I guarantee the cap finish in 6 / 12 / 24 / 60 + months time ??
I am in the process of discussing this problem with the manufacturer and will let ya know when I have something concrete, THIS IS JUST A HURDLE AND THE CAP IS BY NO MEANS DEAD,
Do i have any volunteers to go out for 4/5 days and have the time of your life, then sign off the new cap!! ;o)
All the best
Mick
P.S. now on the lookout for a Griffiths (the early one)

Hi Paul,
Ni Hao'
I too would prefer a Stainless Cap possibly with a locking mechanism but explaining this with the language barrier is quite difficult, however I will try again my other problem is that both of my spare caps are now with manufacturers in China and they won't post them to another possible supplier.
One of the ideas I have is to have just the cap face and the trigger mechanism copied in 316 Stainless but this will be quite a task as the originals were die cast and it will necessitate a lot of machining to make a suitable replacement.
Many people have had caps re-chromed but the finish is either poor from the start or they have pimples quite quickly, the caps are quite straight forward to strip for chrome but remember the pins on come out in one direction.
Hope this helps.
Mick
P.S. I'm sure we could not have picked a more complex item to start this ball rolling.!!

Hi Paul,
but explaining this with the language barrier is quite difficult
I am currently working with a member of the chinese air force, if you would like me to ask him to translate something for you email me (mark@gbsportscar.com) and I'll see if he'll do it. His technical English is very good (he was the one individual selected from all their armed forces to study in the UK) so it may alleviate the problem above.but explaining this with the language barrier is quite difficult
Bothing ventured nothin gained and all that

Hi Mark,
Many thanks for the kind offer, I'm in Ireland until the 30th but if you xould explain to your friend -
I would like them to quote in manufacturing the cap face and the trigger mechanism in high quality Stainless Steel, this would mean that all of the visible area of the cap would be stainless steel.
I do hope this makes sense, it would appear to be the way forward as different people are after different cap specs and with top quality stainles steel at least we should be able to overcome the longevity problem.
Should you want any more detail please feel free to contact me.
All the best

Have actually worked out some words and got a rough translation, my collegue wants to discuss the fine detail tomorrow, so should have a full translation for you by the weekend. I'll mail the words to the email address you emailed me from.
Apparently Stainless Steel is not something that translates that easily.
