Window help please??

With the carepeting almost finished...at last , i am moving on to the window!
The cars got windup windows and the drivers side one goes down ok but then clicks when you try and get the thing back up again??
Any ideas? or is it a new one? if the latter any ideas where i can get one?

The window lift mechanism uses a 'rack and pinion' type drive. I guess the drive gears have worn and are slipping? If so you may need a new window lift assembly. I don't know what they're from, although I remember some time back somebody said they thought they were a Rover 820 unit swapped to the other side of the car. If it was me, I'd try to get it through a dealer/specialist, and I'd also get them to fit it. But that's just because I hate difficult fiddly jobs and don't like spending hours wading round scrap yards!

I had exactly as you describe with the Beetle years ago, and indeed it needed a new winder mechanism.. quite an odd looking affair and about £20 for a new one.

I've got an 1988 S1 and the window winder is off a 1979-1987 Audi 80 Part No 813837399D Price from dealer £55.43 I'm still searching the scrap yard without any luck!
