Started up my S3 yesterday to go out for a new year blast and within about 5 seconds of turning the engine on the revs shot up to just under 3000rpm.

I let the car warm up to see if it would drop down but it constantly idles at just under 3000rpm. So next I removed the connector to the idle speed control valve and the rev's drop immediately down to 500-600 and as soon as I reconnected it the revs went straight back up.

knowing how unreliable the throttle pot is as well I unplugged that and sure enough the revs dropped straight away back down to 500-600.

It will normally idle at 900rpm once warmed up and was doing this last weekend when I last moved it.

So the question has to be, is it the throttle pot or the idle speed valve or something else ? !

Thanks in advance ...

Yes it sounds like it must be one of these, but I can't see any way to tell which one without more investigation. Your best bet is to measure the throttle pot resistance and see if you can spot any fault there (if you can't, it doesn't mean it is OK). If this doesn't identify the cause, your options are trial and error replacing components or calling in a professional.

It was the throttle pot ...

I used the Gunson fault finder on the ECU and got a error code for the throttle pot. So I popped down the local ford garage picked up a new one, installed and everything is working fine with no more faults reported !!..

Thanks again Chingers for your offer of help, hope to see ya at one of the next Hampshire TVR meetings ...
