Happy New Year everyone, or it would be if I had'nt got big holes in outriggers, both sides as well!! I know its a major problem, and a common one, the rest of the chassis seems to be ok, well apart from the bit at the very back under the boot, but I'm not worried about that at the moment. Have taken the car to R T Racing and they have quoted about 2 grand in total for both sides. Doing some of the work myself is totally out of the question, no time or storage facilities.
Does the price quoted seem to be fair, if not, where else specializes in this kind or repair. I live in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs and have no objection in travelling in order to get the best price and job done. Thanks.

i have just done a body off restore and it wasn't that difficult but like you said it is time and effort ,

it may be worth giving these people a ring
www.moore-racing.com/
they are in milton keynes and may give you a better price if you can do some of the prep work yourself ( ie removing body bolts ,bonnet off ( i kept mine in the garden) seats out

also check out thie thread for some more info
www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=11&h=&t=45885

if you want any more info let me know

i went the whole hog in the end and did it myself with a lot of help from TVR Club Members

Hi Paul,

Commiserations on your discovery - I've been there too so I know the feeling!!

I can also recommend Moore Racing - they repaired my outriggers and did a top job. I did some of the prep myself (about the same amount as Spivvy by the sounds of it) and they did the job for £600 (excl. VAT). There are more details on my car profile.

If you contact them, speak to Richard Moore - he was really helpful when I dealt with him, and managed to fit the job into the tight timescales I was working to - top bloke!

Hope it works out OK for you.

Richard

Sorry to hear that tatty head.

I also have a huge hole in my outrigger and the one on the other side is not too good either. Hopefully I will get the body off mine my self in the spring and get the welding work done by a friendly local. Spivvy seems to have made a really good job of his (check out northants web site). Did you do the welding too Spivvy? I really must make a meet soon. From previous threads I think that Moore racing did seem fairly cheap. I think a lot depends upon if the job can be done by jacking the body up a few inches, or if the whole lot has to come off.

I hope it all works out ok, at least you will have a nice shiney chassis at the end of it.

Just done the outriggers on my car - well not quite, still painting them. I lifted the body a few inches to enable the old ones to be cut out and the new ones to be welded in.

I was quite worried about lifting the body before i started, but this turned out to be the easy bit, and I think removing it would not be a great deal harder. Especially if you have some mates who will help with the lift, or better still lifting gear. I found the hardest part was notching the tube and aligning everything up before the welding. Having the body raised aided this, as you could lower it to check the fit of outriggers and the dreaded seat belt mounts.

All in all the job cost me £25 for 21 feet of 1.5" tube, £60 for the welding, the only job i didn't do my self - and not easy as you are welding on your back at strange angles. And a bottle of brandy for an engineer who made me some selves to joint the front tube and some new bushes for the seat belt mounts.

Who ever you get to do the job make sure they paint the new outriggers well before they fit everything back, garages do have a tendency to skimp this part. This is the reason i decided to do the job myself, and well worth it, as you will find areas of the chassis, especially the rear seat belt mounts, and the main chassis rail body mount that is badly rusted and in need of TLC

Try phoning David Gerald (TVR specialists) which aren’t a million miles from you, just outside Stratford, they quote me a reasonable price, 16 hours for doing the outriggers plus all of the other jobs they might find or you may want doing.

welding was done by a mate using a gas argon welder we cut the section out that were rotten and he made a new section up on a jig ,we then found some slightly smaller tubing to fit inside the existing on to act as a sleeve which allowed for a perfect fit .(i have enough tubing left if you need some)

further to this another guy in the TVR club who got his outriggers replaced without taking the body off just by jacking it up a few inches next northants TVR meet is this sunday 11th but i am working that weekend so may not make it drop me and e-mail and i will get you onto the northants circulation list so you know whats going on

Finally Don't despair i have been there and hit rock bottom i only have the car 2 months when the holes appeared it seemed paint and waxoyl were the only thing holding them together i enclose a picture of the worst one for an example of how bad they can get

Hi Spivvy,

I am guessing the picture is of the front near side outrigger. Mine is the same. although I hoovered out all of the rusty bits in the summer to stop them trapping any more water.

Sadly I am not able to make the 11th either, which is a shame. It would be great if you could add me to the mailing list.

I am at stephen.carlisle@unipath.com

I will be cracking on with my chassis in the spring, that way it will be spot on for the summer. Although with the amount of salt on the road at the moment, the V8S is not seeing much action.
