Gerald,
I have access to the hinges. Can you just confirm that you 'just' take off the hinge plate by removing the one long and 2 short bolts, replace the the 'top hat bush' and refit?. And this can be done with the door closed and latched and each hinge plate individually? It looks to me as if the 'brim' of the top hat is between the door skin and the body skin peering through the shut from outside......or maybe that is a washer (or maybe the bottom of the body bobbin)???
Once I get the top plate off I have a guy standing by who says he can make up a 8mm internal diam bush (for S1) from your diagrams and the old one kindly supplied!!.

Hello Trevor,
Just finished this job on my S3. It is correct that you can change the hinge bushes 1 by 1 with the door closed. BUT bushes were in perfect condition when I took my hinges out. Problem on my car was that the top body bobbin was split in half and fell out.
I glued it back in place and added a stainless 2mm plate using professional 2-component glue.
Biggest problem was the lower long hinge bolt. Because the bobbin is brass and the bolt steel the bolt thread was badly damaged preventing the bolt to come out without damaging the lower bobbin.
Judging from your post I am afraid your body bobbin came loose as well.
Some pics
Door out, no connector on door harness
Lower body bobbin
Top body bobbin , half missing
Bobbin and plate glued in place
