I actually went up the shard this week and really enjoyed it. It isn't cheap at just under £25 pp but compared to other attractions in London it isn't too bad.

The view was brilliant. We went up at 5pm so we could see it both in daylight and then at night. I thought they might be quite strict in terms of viewing times, but we entered at 5 and left just before 7. The staff were really relaxed and we could have stayed longer had we wanted to.

There are three viewing levels. The top one (although even that is still about 10 from the actual top) is open at the top, but high up. The middle one has viewing monitors which were good.

The best thing for me was being able to walk around the top and see London from every angle. The tallest building I had been up there before was Tower 42, which has a bar at the top. That too was impressive and I'm not sure if you could sneak up there for a bit on the pretence of going in for a drink but then changing your mind...

Agree, actually the lift ride is the best bit.

Alexandra Palace is quite a good free spot. Other than that Primrose Hill.

Hampstead Heath is nice, and you can get better views than my photo suggests.

It's quite special on bonfire night - you can see all the fireworks going off all across the city smile

certainly a good view from the top of St Pauls, but also loads of steps and not cheap at £16 although at the moment you can get 2 for 1 if you're going by train.

Only been to London once but I seem to remember a great view from Greenwich Observatory. I think it was free but that was about 20 years ago.
