My son has a young persons (16-18) Oyster card. It runs out 30 Sep. He will need to replace it with a proper adult Oyster card upon expiry.

He travels daily into zone 1 from zone 6. At the moment, courtesy of his 16-18 Oyster card, he can buy a monthly ticket half price. About £109 instead of £218.

So I was wondering if, in September, he could by an annual ticket on his current card, which would cost about £1100 instead of £2200.

2 ticket offices have given 2 different answers. 1 said no problem, buy the annual ticket at the discount rate and it would be transferred over to his adult oyster card when the 16-18 card expired and was replaced with the adult oyster card. The other said no, you can't by any ticket beyond the expiry of your current Oyster card.

Anyone know for sure?

I'd be inclined to email TfL directly so that you have a written answer if you're expecting it to transfer at the lower cost and it doesn't.
